Fair points all. In particular, I hadn't thought about how much the Tidal play was a financial screw up. But he can always make crazy money by touring, right?
Staging this would be just wildly risky beyond all reason. Going to prison for years, getting sued for gazillions in civil penalties, being ostracized from elite realms of society - all of this would be on the table.
Really, do you think they will go to prison? They have so many connections and high powered lawyers.. If they had to even go for a day, it would be televised so they make money. Either way they "win."

How is she going to keep making that 1 million a month if her show is cancelled and no one buys their merchandise? Kanye is practically a fashion joke, by raising his design profile and actually showing some sort of action on her famously plot-free reality show, it keeps them in the headlines.

Sorry for the multiple posts but here's my take:
(1) I believe that Kanye bought her that ring to deflect from the money troubles. Allegedly he bought that ring for her because of his Adidas deal. This is a 10 million dollar deal with "potential to become a billion dollar deal". But that sounds like spin to me. IF it really was a 10 million dollar deal, why would he spend a cool 4 million on a ring? I suspect he bought the ring and announced to everyone that he had Adidas engraved on it so everyone was talking about his amazing new deal with Adidas that was so lucrative his wife got a second engagement ring that they could not afford.
(2) I suspect that they wanted to change the story from "Kanye in debt 53 million" to "Kanye can afford a 4 million dollar ring for his wife". I suspect that because they could not actually afford this ring, they staged the robbery.
(3) A robbery would be convenient because it would make Kim look like the victim (especially if she pleaded with Kanye not to replace the ring since it was her fault that she flashed it so much). I think they chose a time like this with Paris in the headlines for so many troubles, and timed it after the Lochte scandal so people would say "no way they staged it, look what happened to Lochte!" If they were found out the headlines would be "second celebrity stages phony robbery".
(4) So Kim really went over the top flashing her gems, often when she's really naked (wearing a sheer shirt for example and no bra). It was in a scary foreign country (remember the Jenners are republicans although Kanye is a dem), they couldn't be faulted if they didn't know the phone for the police. They probably told the hotel they didn't want any cameras on as they had their E! camera crew, and didn't want any footage leaked. The hotel won't go public with this since their whole business model is that they are tight-lipped and won't rat out their guests (it's ultra exclusive and private- think ultra wealthy clients such as Leo DiCaprio who value privacy).
(6) Kim made sure to tell everyone she was Facetiming Blac Chyna when it happened (cross promotion), the jewels stolen were those Kanye gave her to celebrate his Adidas line (another promotion), and the ones he designed with Jacob Arabo (mini commercial for this line).
(7) A couple things that I find hard to believe
- Kim managed to wiggle out of zip ties. Yeah these robbers were so experienced that no one got a video or photo of them, but they managed to tie the zip ties so loosely she wiggled out of them? Sure....
- The kids were in New York with their nannies. Why wouldn't the baby Saint be with his mom? Makes no sense to me, unless the robbery was staged and they didn't want the kids involved at all.
- She REALLY over the top sent out images of her jewelry. Almost like she wanted the news networks to have clear photographs so that her husband's jewelry line and Adidas contract would be highlighted over and over.
- Somehow the beloved security guard came out smelling like roses, because of the circumstances of the alleged robbery. He was off with her sister! She blames herself!
(8) I don't care about the Kim or Kanye. The sex tape doesn't bother me either. The show is cute. But I suspect that their motivations are clear. They will get the insurance money for the ring they could never afford, they promoted their upcoming Blac Chyna show, the Adidas collaboration, the jewelry line with Jacob Arabo, and raised the ratings for their floundering reality show. They also timed it for ultra drama by making Kanye cancel the show in Queens mid-performance (right when he was singing a hit song - just another little promotion there). The only losers here are the hotel (makes sense, he allegedly has a house there so why would Kanye care), the city of Paris. The big winners are the Kardashains (they all came together to help her! The kids were safe! Heres a dozen photos of these jewels you can buy soon!), Kanye (Here's the song that was interrupted!), and the show (ratings boost - Kim stops filming goes into hiding for maximum suspense, then tearfully recounts her night of terror!!!!!!!!!).

I haven't read the article but did hear many different news pieces on it throughout the day.
1) Kim has an entourage of body guards with her everywhere she goes, but most especially when she's traveling.
2) How in the world did 4 armed men get past all that security, the hotel lobby, know where her suite was, and even be able to get to that level in the elevator?? Those suites always require a special key in the elevator that regular guests would never have access to.
3) And did they break the door down to get in? How is it that no one heard the commotion?
4) the kids and Kris were nowhere close by? kind of convenient.
5) she was able to get herself out of her own bindings. Now come on! her arms and legs were bound and her mouth was taped up and she was tossed into the bath tub. Is she super woman that she was able to get free of her bindings?
