Sorry, I loved Prince and is music, but I will not allow you to diminish Michael's talent unchecked. Michael also wrote his own lyrics and music. He also sang, danced, and produced. Michael also played with other artists and wrote songs for them. Michael's "Thriller" was the first time that MTV aired a Black artist, to be followed by Prince. People like to compare Michael and Prince, but apparently they admired and respected each other. They both contributed enormously to the industry and other people's lives. It need not be one or the other, as they did not view it that way. Carry on.

Plus 1. I am the person that wrote that Prince is the biggest artist in 30 years (other than MJ). Did you see the interview where people asks Prince of he regretted not doing Bad with MJ? Hillarious!

Both had unmatched talent.

Last year he he performed a free concert in Baltimore. Almost, if not all, of the major news outlets carried the story.

He was amazing like that- no lawsuits, scandals, personal embarrassments, crimes, arrests. He was all about the music in every way. I don't folks can even appreciate this about him. No Lawsuits!, No ghostwriters! no scandals! No arrests!

Here, Four Washingtonpost articles from less than a year ago when Prince came to town. I remember seeing segments on the news broadcasts too. I imagine similar articles are written in other city papers as well when he tours. He was a private person and pushing 60, why else would you expect him to be in the news outside of music?

Btw, the title of the last article:
Is Prince the best person who has ever done this whole music thing?

I am in disbelief that some of you don't understand his impact and legacy.

He did an amazing amount of charity work, and deliberating and specifically stayed out of the news. We interviewed him in 2004 (which was amazing for us, as he rarely spoke publically or granted interviews.) He struck me as very shy and thoughtful. Not at all like the flamboyance and flash of his onstage persona.

That was his specific point. He deliberately stayed out of the news--unless it was about music. He wasn't a Kayne West (no offense Kanye!) But musically he is/was always in the popular culture. A couple of months ago. CNN posted a pic about how youthful he looked in his passport photo.

He wrote for so many other artists, and transformed music. Trust me, if you truly understood his impact, he means something to you.

And this is shitty of me to say perhaps, but don't post stuff like this on a thread titled "RIP." Just disrespectful.

Other than Michael Jackson, I don't think there is one musician bigger than Prince in last 30 years so yes, I think you're the only one. I'm 34 fwiw.

What type of music were you listening to in the 80's? In addition, Prince was heavily involved in the music for the "Batman" movie in 1989, including the song "Batdance".

In terms of other artists that are big from the last 30 years, Madonna falls into that group.

Prior to that, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Diamond, both of which are still alive.

NEIL DIAMOND? LMAO, Neil Diamond is nowhere near Prince's level. Not even close.

Neil Diamond crosses multiple generations. Go to a concert of his sometime, you will be surprised at the demographics.

That doesn't change the fact he is not nearly as influential or iconic or multi-talented as Prince was.

+1 million. Neil Diamond was a fuddy duddy even in his own era and occupied a much narrower sliver of fandom and influence. If we are going back to that era - I'd say Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Diana Ross. Santana and maybe Dionne Warwick/Burt Bacharach a bit further down.

In any case, not understanding how hugely influential Prince is as an artist, a real virtuoso, and frankly awesome and fun music, is a tragedy.

Prediction: Bruno Mars will become a national treasure of this level over the next 10-15 years.

I forgot James Taylor in my all-time influential list.
