^^Current parent here, wasn't at the session so can't speak to that. I too am thrilled to have my DC at DCI and have had no problems with the technology. However, I do hear about some kids who really struggle with the game access in class and staying on task. PP, DCI parent, just because the tech isn't an issue for your child please don't judge these kids for getting distracted or call their parents "obnoxious". The more I talk to my DC about school, I wonder why DCI has chosen to take this path. On a non-Chromebook issue I was quite concerned with the principals email this weekend about the misuse of social media during school hours. Again, not an issue for us, but I would prefer school to be device free during breaks. They get enough screen-time already. For now, I'm a "Mean mom" because I won't allow 3G.

My thoughts, yeh what MS kid is gonna snitch on classmate?
Parent: Are you screening logs for inappropriate content?
Admin: We don't have that capacity, we rely on parents to tell us.
They are open to having a Parent Tech Advisory group and said they would "think about removing games during class times."

There seems to be not only resistance to considering looking more carefully at research and changes to the model, but some real defensiveness too from the administration. There is a core group of about 5 parents whose kids apparently can't control their impulses and use tech responsibly at home and at school and their parents want to make it the school's fault. There are a few more who want to have a different program than what's being offered and are used to throwing their yuppy weight around and getting what they want. It appears many of these people came from feeders, probably were obnoxious there, and continue to be so. I am a 7th grade parent and THRILLED with the program and the responsiveness of all the staff at the school.

Not the PP who posted on the meeting, but since you're here and also posting and you feel that was a misrepresentation, then please do specifically share 4 things helpful to this conversation:
1. What is the actual % of time students have access to their Chromebooks in a typical school day? Including lunch and breaks.
2. If you agree someone raised the concern about access, what was the actual Admin response to what you were describing as 5 families whose kids don't have impulse control? What did the Administration say about this concern?
3. For the parents you say want a different program and are "used to throwing their yuppie weight around", what program are they advocating for?
4. What was the Admin response to the program they were "throwing their yuppie weight around" for?

It's going to impact the feeders too. We are happy with our charter school. The ONLY reason we'd lottery into MV or YY would be a guaranteed path to a high preforming hs. But that kid of tech heavy education is not what I want for my kids in their formative educational years. MV has a lot of openings in K this year, but we are not lottering for them.

The parents on Montgomery County have similar concerns as DCI parents. I don't think MoCo is using computers in every class which helps mitigate problems and I don't think computers are being used in middle school but I could be wrong. Any MoCo parents out there, we'd love your perspective if you happen to be reading this!

The chief education officer and the chief operating officer have been like this since the beginning of founding YY. For better or worse, the my-way-or-the-highway mantra is a fundamental part of the culture for parents, students and teachers. Deltas: it is very frustrating and alienating to parents. It also ingrains problems that may come up to a core level, making it hard to see the light. Pluses: having such a single-minded and narrow beam of focus over-layed with complete control of things means that the vision is applied and there is never a tide that will sweep it away.

Wow, do you have any idea how sad you look, coming onto a thread you could just ignore to link to posts about people complaining about this thread?
And if you didn't notice, no one cares if people are sick of it. This is a real school and these are real concerns. But maybe you're a victim of the "digital divide" and you didn't realize no one is forcing you to click on a clearly labeled thread if you don't want to read it anymore?
