Your odds of latin/basis are like 10 percent. Many move for 6th grade.

Ok, that sounds like your preference? But not everyone's. At BASIS and my child has some friends who live in the Deal zone, so clearly some people prefer it.

How would you know? You have no way of knowing this. People from oyster would be very unlikely to get into DCI bc there just aren’t many spots for high school and zero for middle. Please don’t post false information.

Also as tutor for many families at OA I know many many families who try to lottery to DCI bc JR just doesn’t have a spanish program like dci does.

I chose Basis over Deal. It was the availability of Deal/JR that made the choice easier. I was pretty sure that Basis would be the right fit (and it was), but it isn't a sure thing, and I wanted a good back up if I was going to pull the child out. I didn't.

We were IB for Deal/JR but chose Latin because the extremely small class size was a much better fit for our kid's learning style. Kid also had some SPED needs and I was spectacularly unimpressed with the Deal offerings in that regard. I asked the rather supercilious Deal guy about IEP support for our dyslexic DC and was told it would only be provided for math and English. I said "Do they not have to read in social studies or science . . . ?" But if we had had a neurotypical DC who was self-motivated and was okay with the large school size, then Deal/JR would have been fine.

OP reviving this old thread. Yes, this is me. I assumed that because I moved into the best pyramid in DC that I was all set. I’m starting to realize that was a naive assumption and now weighing options. It makes a lot of sense that I need to wait and see, but I can already tell that the current state of public schools might not work.

What are your concerns, OP? We are considering moving up to that pyramid.

Not specific to DCPS. Things like mainstreaming special needs kids to the detriment of all, declining standards in math and especially literacy, large class sizes.

You can also add the new horrible science curriculum to that.

PP above, that is not the reason for the families I know. It’s because they want a pathway thru high school for spanish in addition to more broader curriculum and EC offerings.
