I agree with this. I think a lot of parents are not even trying to teach their sons about issues like consent or treating women respectfully and equally in professional and social settings. I would have thought it would be better now than it was when I was a teen in the 90s but in some ways it's worse. And no this is not limited to the children of far-right MAGA republicans. I know plenty of liberal parents who voted for Harris and are currently lamenting the election outcome who are also clearly teaching their sons that it is fine to treat women and girls as less than and that being personally aggressive and obnoxious is fine because "that's just how boys are."

I agree a lot of it exposes the inequalities a lot of these parents have bought into in their own lives. It seems like a lot of people are very feminist and egalitarian up until they get married and then a lot of the men expect to be taken care of and waited on at home and the women are fine with it as long as they get a big glittery ring and a nice house and don't get hassled too much about their spending. It's really something to see. Boys who grow up in that environment develop some very retrograde attitudes about gender (as to the girls) regardless of their parents' declared politics.

Fear of being raped, fear walking through a parking garage, worrying about whether you locked your windows and doors, dealing with pregnancy, dealing with miscarriage - as the person HAVING the miscarriage, dealing with getting a D&C for miscarriage, child birth, breast feeding, being a working mom, getting sexually harassed by your boss, getting "laid off" for pregnancy and maternity absences (if you were even able to take any sort of absence). Never mind abortion in the traditional sense.

Men live in a world built by and for men. They are immune to many laws and norms made by men that impact women and our daughters.

Men the world over stalk, rape, murder, disfigure, kidnap, abuse, and use the law to punish women. They wish we would go home, stay barefoot and pregnant, and give them back the good jobs and spots in colleges.
And they make laws that kill pregnant women despite not understanding how ectopic pregnancies and sepsis work, apparently.

So no, I don't think someone who can never experience these things can understand them. At least, that's the only explanation I can come up with on why men continue to do the things they do - a lack of empathy. If it's not a lack of empathy, what is it?
