It is conversations like this that give me pause about schools in Florida. Regardless of rank, people have strong opinions about the politics and the state, and it seems to influence their perception of the universities. Not saying it makes sense or is justified, but nothing ignites a debate more than a post about Florida schools.

A little off topic- but what is Gainesville like? UF is my kids top choice right now but waiting on Ivy Day (which will most likely be a rejection for 95% of us) before committing.

It is a youthful town. Our community college alone has around 30,000 students. Most UF students find their friend niches.
It is an extremely diverse campus and college community. Like the other SEC colleges there is strong school spirit.
Women's sports bring out large crowds. Lady Gator Gymnastics meets typically get attendance numbers of 12,000 or more each meet. Lady Gator volleyball also brings out large attendance crowds.

Since the murders of the 1990's there is a very strong safety culture on the campus. I'm a senior citizen female and I feel safe on campus in the evenings walking to events. The chief of campus police is a female lesbian and the highest paid in this role in the State of Florida.

The main negative is flights in and out of Gainesville. Their are non stop flights to Miami otherwise you have to change planes in Atlanta or Charlotte. Otherwise you can fly into Jacksville (preferred) or Orlando (I try not to do this.)

I know it’s hard for you to believe but some of us raise college age kids (girls) of all whom we’re virtually certain won’t “get pregnant” while in college. You see there is something taught to some kids called basic morals.

Basic morals didn't prevent my college roomate from getting raped.

College age girls should have pill, implant or mini-IUD. You cannot rely on condoms only as a young woman as a contraceptive. If for medical reasons none of these work, Plan B is available in FL without a prescription.

It's irresponsibleto suggest medications with non-zero side effects just in case a woman is raped.

As horrendous as it is to be a woman in this world and have to worry about being raped (1/3 college age women will experience sexual assault) constantly, it is certainly not irresponsible to prepare yourself or make sure your daughter is prepared just in case. In fact, it is the opposite. It is irresponsible NOT to have some type of preventive birth control in place.

It is immoral and reprehensible that you would suggest young women in college be on birth control to prevent against some man thinking he has the right to have sex with her, against her consent, rather than focusing on preventing those rapes to begin with. And focusing on the behavior of young men that makes them think they can do so.

Get your head out of your a$$. There never has been, and never will be, a time in history where men don’t rape. This is a certainty. Doesn’t matter what we teach them. Doesn’t matter how we punish them. Doesn’t matter what mental health therapies or drugs we provide. Ain’t gonna happen. For you to think we can stop men from raping women is just magical thinking.

Therefore, we must all be prepared in case it happens to you. Because if it’s not you, it will just be someone else.
