I feel like every time there's a mass shooting (the fact that that's such a hum drum thing to type is alarming, but I digress) the gun enthusiasts come into the thread with the sole purpose of flexing their knowledge of weapons. A good example can shoot into an inch at 100 yards if properly handled by a competent marksman. The more average performance with an average shooter and average rifle would be 4-6 inches at 100 yards. These results require close, careful sight alignment, breath control, trigger control, recoil control, consistent head position on the stock, a stable shooting platform, etc. Point and shoot will result in random, if any, hits. General direction shooting the same. Myths and ignorance notwithstanding, there is a lot more space around targets than on them. Sportsmen spend years perfecting their skills and thousands of dollars on customized firearms and sights to shrink their shot groups and win competitions.

He told them straight up that he was hearing voices and was going to commit a mass shooting. He was failed by the VA, the system, whoever didn’t take him seriously. This is not about MAGA or anything else. It’s about a complete failure of the system to help someone. Welcome to our government.

Is our government voting to fully fund mental health, to offer universal coverage for mental health, to make sure everyone has insurance? Are we voting to fund the things necessary to create a system to help? If not, who is rejecting such bills and legislation?

Every. Single. Time there is a connect to insanity. Insane people shoud get treatment. Sometimes involuntary hospitalization. Insane people should not own weapons. Leglislate gun control all you like-I'm for it- but this needs to happen too. There are other ways to harm as we see in countries with more gun control.

This is PP - I live in Maine. I’m living this event. He was alive during Sandy Hook and that should have been enough for him, and everyone, to come out against assault weapons. But yes, it’s a big deal to change his tune, and again, he could be voted out due to it if enough people aren’t as deeply impacted as Jared is.

I am a military spouse and disturbed that this guy was hearing voices, having psychotic breaks etc. and .... going about his day? Have they determined why he was not receiving treatment through the military, and why he had access to an assault weapon? Was it acquired illegally? This sounds like a fail on so many levels. And I abhor the loss of life. So much sad news.

You’re welcome. We also have one gun in the house, stored unloaded in a combination safe. We are in Maryland and my husband went through a training course and a rigorous background check. There’s no reason why anyone else shouldn’t have to either.

Anyone who doesn't have any wants or warrants or is not subject to a current restraining order can buy an AR-15 (one a month if they want!) perfectly legally. It's the mass shooter's favorite. Nothing to be concerned about!

I am the PP, PP was responding to. By all means legislate that. I am fine with AR-15 in a town or city armory to be unlocked for the citizens to use in case of attack. I don't see why anyone needs one at home either.

Yes, that type of law might interfere with a white man’s right to own an assault weapon-a right which trumps everyone else’s right to live.

I guess it is never the time to ban guns, but time to dismantle the government. Why are the police and swat teams out there hunting him down? Shouldn't the MAGA 2A nuts out there showing their chops and being the good guy with a gun?
