Translation: they will water down criteria and let in a whole bunch of unqualified people who’ll fail out OR they’ll have to make curricula easier, bringing the education standards down for everyone. What a brilliant plan. We can all be equal when we are all equally mediocre to crappy.

Right because a 4.0 or 3.9 GPA Black student is really going to fail at Harvard and needs the entire university to dumb down curriculum to be able to learn. You sound like white folks in the 50s that had a fit the moment one Black family moved into the neighborhood. Forget that the Black family is as educated and wealthy, if not more than you. SMH

This has been going on for decades. Letting in less qualified students because of race leads to students who will have a harder time at the tougher colleges. Some manage it, others do not, who would have done better at a lower tier college that suited their academic profile. But the colleges want their diversity and make an offer that is hard to refuse.

A study by Princeton sociologist Thomas Espenshade examined applicants to top colleges from 1997, when the maximum SAT score was 1600 (today it’s 2400). Espenshade found that Asian-Americans needed a 1550 SAT to have an equal chance of getting into an elite college as white students with a 1410 or black students with an 1100.

This research was published in a PUP book called No Longer Separate, Not Yet Equal: Race and Class in Elite College Admission and Campus Life by Thomas J. Espenshade & Alexandria Walton Radford (a free excerpt here: http://press.princeton.edu/chapters/s9072.pdf)

White people should view asians as more of a threat to their kids' chances of getting into an elite college than blacks and hispanics. I would say be careful what you wish for, but unfortunately for them, it's too late.

Again 72% of Asians have college degrees. No one is discriminating against them. They’re still going to colleges/universities. Only 43% of white hold a college degree. They’re upset that 100% of Asian students who apply to Harvard are not accepted.

No, they’re upset because Asian students are being held to much higher standards than students of other races. Asians are also tired of having their personalities used negatively against them that is also disgustingly based on racial stereotypes.

Way to try to deflect from the true issue.

Asians are still getting college degrees, sweetie. No one is discriminating against them. If only 25% had college degrees, I would agree with discriminatory practices.

But they had to do even more to get in.

That’s the problem. They didn’t want more Asians so they raised the bar to impossible levels for Asians and lowered it for Hispanics and Blacks.

And this isn’t just Harvard. It’s everywhere.

So you can argue that they get degrees and such- but they have to work three times as hard to get half as much.

Sounds like racism, no?

Omg they do not have to do more to get in. You act like Asian kids have cornered the market on amazing. Have you read about some of the achievements of high school kids applying to Harvard?!

Here’s a mental exercise for you. Answer it before you post this stupid logic again, as if you are making any kind of cogent argument. Compare the GPA, SAT scores, MCAT scores etc. for all students admitted to universities like Harvard and into medical school matriculating classes.

Then try to sit there with a straight face and tell me there isn’t a system wide bias against Asians where they are being held to much higher standards than other peers.

72% of Asians have college degrees. Now tell me how many Fortune 500 companies have Asians in leadership positions and in C suite positions.

The systematic bias against Asians starts early at college and continues on after. Asians are too good for colleges and ruin diversity quotas, therefore we need to give them negative scores for personality while requiring they have much higher GPAs and SAT scores compared to their peers. Professional world: Sorry Asians, you were good, but your personalities make you unsuitable for leadership positions. Thank you for doing all of our research and innovation. But no leadership for you! You can even keep going to government. How many Asians are running the country, counties, and cities despite all of that education you keep pointing to?

I’m glad Asians are rising up and standing up for themselves. Yeah, they’re blowing all of you halfwits and lazy parents out of the water, and now they will break out of their timid shells to own you on the racial stereotypes of their personalities you use to keep their numbers artificially lower at top universities and out of positions of power in the corporate world and government.

In case you haven’t noticed, the west is on the decline while we are beginning a brand new rise of an Asian based century that may mast for a very long time.

How outrageous would that be? Of course it’d be despicable to reject a black man for negative personality scores based on racial stereotypes like that. So why should we tolerate that crap but for Asians? And you wonder why Asians are upset when Affirmative Action setup a system where they have to be judged in their personality, which ended up being based on racial stereotypes of their perceived behavior. I can’t believe we even need to discuss this. Affirmative Action should have died a long time ago based on the monstrosity it morphed into. Maybe at first it had merit, but it just ended up becoming a race based system using stereotypes to judge people.

You are just making shit up. No one used an Asian stereotype of personality. They are giving points to students who are engaged in activities and organizations and community causes, as they should. The ability to contribute to group projects and engage with other people is a valuable asset and skill. Plenty of Asian kids are involved in activities and get the deserved boost for it. Antisocial hermits do not contribute as much to a school or to society, no matter their race or test scores.

No. You’re being racist here. And they totally did this to Asians.

https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2018/06/harvard-admissions-personality/563198/

Also, there was another article about how the alumni would meet Asians and rank the personality is good.

And for the record: Asians aren’t all anti-social hermits. Just like black men aren’t all violent criminals. Because that’s racist.

Obama voted as a Senator to deny Alito a vote on the Senate floor. They should have voted against all his picks, not just Garland.

It was blatantly Illegal. And huge lawsuits should be filed. It was absurd.

This is a great analogy. Thank you.

If anyone is surprised by this: California banned affirmative action twice. Affirmative Action is not popular even in a very democratic state. And they banned it in 2020- with an even more larger majority of liberal voters and with a higher percentage of votes.

Racism comes in all forms. And racism against Asians is a particularly sinuous type of racism which somehow the POC who think the Harvard admissions process was not racist - think is ok. Like- how are you NOT being racist? Yes, we get college degrees but we have to hide our culture, get even higher grades and more EC and sports, work even harder for everything and on top of that be ok with you guys thinking we don’t belong there because you belong there more.

That is anti-Asian racism.

They should require all applicants to include a list of academic enrichment classes/programs they took outside of the regular school day, and the dates of those classes.

This will allow admissions staff to recognize and weight the applications of those less able to afford such programs, on a race-blind basis.

This is silly. Would you accept that URMs who WILL NOT get into Harvard ARE NOT discriminated against because they will go to college somewhere?

Yes! If only looking at college acceptance, obviously there are other factors in our society that are systemically racist. Again not every applicant can go to Harvard. There are limited seats. I also believe there are other great universities that are not Ivy League.

Is this true? I think it is just more people going to college now than before, mostly women.
Women tend to be more average, so the higher the percentage that go to college, you will end up with a higher share of women, as the below average pool is dominated by men.

I'm one of those Democrats who is happy to see this ruling. I'd rather see affirmative action on the basis of socioeconomic status rather than race. It would probably get you to the same conclusion rather than giving preferential treatment to UMC and UC POCs.

It doesn't get you there. California has already proven that. As a black woman, I am devasted. How do you eliminate affirmative action when merit is not real. You have many black and latino students graduated from substandard schools and white kids going to high school with golf courses. SAT scores are based on income, not intelligence.

We haven't even come to terms with race in this country.

I hear what you’re saying but I don’t fully agree. Schools can still make decisions based on income. Growing up in a large minority majority city, I would say that the disparity / discrimination is greater based on income. Rich UMC black/white/purple green segregate their kids from those on the wrong side of the tracks no matter whether they are the same race or not.
