i graduated from Tulane (newcomb college baby!) in the early 90s and it was called that back then. it is certainly a fun as hell place to go to school and has many top notch programs and a beautiful campus. i wouldn’t get in now but it was an amazing place to go to school.

Yes. It is known as the "Harvard of the South". Undergrad, too.


Most interesting is how you said that with a straight face.

Regardless, Tulane may become more selective as Jewish students seek a safe environment (almost 50% of Tulane's student body identifies as Jewish).

On the downside, the University of Houston just hired Tulane's super successful head football coach. Without college football is there anything else to do in New Orleans ? (Do you like how I wrote that with a straight face ?)

Yes. It is known as the "Harvard of the South". Undergrad, too.

Ivy is just a sports league. But if you want a comparison, the closest is probably Duke: better than lower ivies Dartmouth brown and Cornell, equal to middle ivies Penn and Columbia. Vanderbilt has been making serious waves in the last decade, probably on par with Cornell or Dartmouth now

I went to law school at Tulane and when people ask where I went, and I tell them, I get people saying "The Harvard of the south!" all the time.

I think Rice has been perceived somewhat higher than Emory and for longer. That is actually the advantage Duke over other Southern schools as well. it has gotten academic recognition outside of just the South for several decades more than Vanderbilt, for instance, which now has very similar student selectivity numbers to Duke. If you went back to the 1980, that would not have been the case. If you went back further in the post Civil War period, pretty much no Southern school was recognized at the level of top Northern schools until Duke.

I think grad schools and global reputation matters. Emory is perceived as better globally.
