Iran has never said it will give up full control of the strait. It has said it will work out an arrangement to allow traffic through its side of the strait. This means tankers will have to paid something. The deep part of the strait was always in Iran’s territory waters. The strait is 21 miles wide at its narrowest going up to 50 but the Iranians side offers the only deep water passage.
