Coronavirus may have infected half of UK population — Oxford study
New epidemiological model suggests the vast majority of people suffer little or no illness. The new coronavirus may already have infected far more people in the UK than scientists had previously estimated — perhaps as much as half the population — according to modelling by researchers at the University of Oxford. If the results are confirmed, they imply that fewer than one in a thousand of those infected with Covid-19 become ill enough to need hospital treatment, said Sunetra Gupta, professor of theoretical epidemiology, who led the study. The vast majority develop very mild symptoms or none at all.

To provide the necessary evidence, the Oxford group is working with colleagues at the Universities of Cambridge and Kent to start antibody testing on the general population as soon as possible, using specialised “neutralisation assays which provide reliable readout of protective immunity,” Prof Gupta said. They hope to start testing later this week and obtain preliminary results within a few days.
If true it would sort of suggest what many people said about experiencing mild flu like symptoms this past winter but tested negative for the flu. Hoping this is really the case.
Well there you go in the UK. Bloomberg just reported that Prince Charles has tested positive.

Well.... that's not what history tells us. 1918 flu killed far more people than this virus ever will in America, the economy didn't collapse as no one stayed home nor was there a shut down (only schools closed, I think and maybe some quarantines in some areas, but nothing like this). And the result? A 10 year boom afterwards.
It’s TBD how many COVID19 will kill. We are barely starting. The 191& flu took 18 months and killed an estimated 675k people. COVID19 could be far more.
Also, what do you mean 1918 didn’t cause a recession? Where did you find that information? Also, that happened during a world war so government spending was high.
Why don't you research and find out about the 1918 recession and tell us all about it?

The people who are criticizing the shutdowns and school closures and cancellation of Easter are not doing it because they worship the GDP over people's lives. They do it because THEY CARE ABOUT PEOPLE'S LIVES. They care about their high school senior who won't have graduation or prom. They care about their second grader who won't have First Communion. They care about their high school junior who can't take the SATs. They care about their middle schooler who is cut off completely from the teaching he/she needs. They care about their elderly parents who are being told they can't go exercise at the community center, or can't see their only friends. I have been told I can't visit my Dad, who is in an elder rehab care center, because of COVID-19 fears.
This is real stuff that is happening to people, and we are being told to accept it because otherwise hospitals and nurses might get overwhelmed. I'm sick of it.
My daughter -- 7 years old -- has been making Easter decorations for two weeks and preparing for the big Easter dinner we normally host, with grandparents and cousins and aunts and uncles. She is actually excited about Easter Mass. She wants to hunt for Easter eggs and have fun with her cousins. It is heartbreaking to tell her this might not happen. The President is absolutely correct to say that this crap needs to end by Easter.
I'm sick of it.

Do you think your daughter will be more heartbroken if some of her relatives die?
Do you realize that when we talk about overwhelmed hospital staff we're talking about patients dying, not just nurses that are a little tired.
You sound like a child.

PP is perhaps young and never suffered a real loss. i mean who can be heartbroken because of easter plans gone awry? this, as thousands are dying around us. it’s just boggles the mind.
+2. That PP sounds astoundingly selfish and shortsighted. She also sounds like one of those “magical childhood” proponents. We’ve explained to our 8yo what’s going on, and she gets the sacrifice for the greater good. She understands that Grandma can’t come visit right from FL now because we don’t want to get her sick, or anyone else.
