I just question what most college degrees are really good for these days. And do those women who attend really make use of their degrees? I mean, seriously what is college attendance an indicator of anyway.?

College is for wealthy people. Many people do not have the luxury of taking 4 year off with no income. This is DCUM. I bet most posters here think everyone goes to college but only a few colleges/universities are…you know…respectable. Only 42% of the US population over 25 have a attended college. A very small percentage of that go to what DCUM would consider respectable colleges/universities.

No, not everyone is doing fine, but it's not like they don't have any opportunities. They just choose not to take them. What happened to personal responsibility?

In any case, 1/3 of working age men aren't in the workforce for various reasons: homeless, working under the table; trading bitcoin; retired early. They made their choices. Yes, it is a choice. You may not like the choices, but you do have choices.

It's a lot easier for white men to get a job than black men, that's for sure.

I somewhat agree with this. I don't know the solution, and it is way too late for our kids, who are post- or about to be post-high school, but it is ridiculous how pervasive "top students" are as compared to 30, 50 or 100 years ago. Have you seen those high school tests posted on Facebook, from like 1910? Sheesh, no comparison in terms of base knowledge needed.

FWIW, I'm a man, and I work in a male dominated field (IT). Interestingly, almost all of my male colleagues are non-US born, to the point that I've had to have conversations with employers about why I didn't provide information about my visa status. My strong impression is that most US born men don't want to do difficult, sometimes boring technical work.

This reminds me of how my DH (college educated) stated that not everyone needs a degree or cut out to get a degree, and as a society, we need to stop pushing so many people into college because it's making a degree worthless.

I responded, "Ok, will you be telling our kids to not go to college because it's not necessary?"

He paused, and said, "No'.

I don't disagree with him on principle, but I am not going to have my kids be the leader here.

And if you look at the future job growth in areas that pay well, they all require a degree.

We need people who are HVAC workers, welders, plumbers, electricians, home healthcare aides. Competency-based and skill-based training are better than a college degree.
