Amazon has a horrible reputation in the tech industry. They greatly increased their pay in the past 1-2 years because they're having difficulty finding talent (all companies are these days, but it is especially pronounced at Amazon). Amazon now pays more than FB/Google at the top end of their bands (350-400k for SDE II, 500-600k for Senior SDE), which is incredible considering Amazon has always been a tier below F/G in terms of prestige, but it's because you will earn every penny working there. I work for a different FAANG and we get tons of ex Amazonians. Could be selection bias since I'm only hearing from the ones who left, but literally every single ex Amazonian I know will bad mouth Amazon at the slightest opportunity. Even some of the current Amazon guys who I'm in contact with say they hate working there and are only staying for the $$$.

Average tenures at Amazon is 18 months, it is one path to maybe getting into othe FAANGs, but it is hardly guaranteed.

I think they have someone looking for graduation dates, and since PP has a recent grad date they get setup to talk to someone. My graduation date is not listed or is from a different century, so is THAT my problem? If I get a recent grad date will it get past the HR drone?

Well, they keep calling for me to reapply. I’ll consider it now that they have higher base salary. Their comp was based on stock rising, but if I had taken It then I would have been in the window when the stock fell, so dodged a bullet. I’m going to call in a favor from college roommate and get referred to Google first.

Yep, now that all of the cloud vendors wone the latest competition, they all need to staff up quickly between poaching from AWS skilled people and also just training anyone with a clearance and a heartbeat.
I have an unrelated BA degree but a TS SCI. Would I need a degree or can certs suffice?

^^ NP working at FAANG. Easiest way to get past the resume screen is to have an internal referral. Any internal referral will do (e.g. doesn't need to be strong glowing recommendation directly to the hiring manager, at my FAANG you just submit a quick form to HR) -- it puts you in a different queue. Almost every candidate we interview comes this way.
Interesting. One of my former coworkers who just had an Associates degree got into FAANG. She was very driven though but I was amazed she did because she stayed at my job 2 months and left. Where do I find these FAANG people?

Those are top jobs. You'd need to impress in an interview.
As a dev? You need relevant experience to get an interview then you have to pass the interview. Many engineers get interviews but it's not easy to crack them.
Netflix pays 450k cash and only hire senior level engineers.
Has to be more than that now. I remember hearing the 450k figure thrown around even 4-5 years ago but big tech salaries have increased a lot since then. Netflix is a place that will fire you at the drop of a hat too.
What kind of skills does a senior level engineer need? What is in demand?

Agree. I don't have the skills to join Netflix as I am working in old technology for too long. If I don't have programming skills but have the ability to get a TS (with full scope poly) and other good skills, wonder if I should get a non programming job in these companies even if I start from a lower level and work my way up. Would the pay be worth it?
I can’t see any reason Netflix would want a TS, but AWS and Azure with gov support would use it, but I doubt pay will be that stellar
AWS and Azure both pay a clearance bonus on top of the regular software engineer compensation. Typically around 40-60k. You can easily hit 300-400k TC in these positions.
To be a software engineer though I would need to take a bootcamp and get a degree or will certs suffice for such a high pay job?

It seems like there are a lot of SDE jobs but I have old skills for that job. Maybe I should look under people jobs vs engineering - I might need to start at entry level due to competition and work my way up.

So what is his secret sauce? I’m a computer science major with a degree from an elite university in my 40s and I can’t land a job paying FAANG rates in tech.
My spouse went to a no name college. It is skill. You either are not good or don’t interview well.
Haha, my skills are fine. I interview fine but can’t get past the screen to interview for the high paying companies. How does he get the interview and chance to show that skill? Does he demo a project on GitHub? Or have a project demo from when he was in school?
If you were interviewing fine you’d be getting past the screen.
Again, I’m talking about the resume screen. If they call me i move on; had an offer from Amazon but no interest in sweatshop or risking being their hire to fire ( which may be the PP).
I assume we are talking past each other. I mean the resume screen where a device or maybe some HR drone scans your resume and you get connected to a person to talk to. When I talk to somebody, I always move onto interviews and coding challenges, and have gotten a bunch of offers but most not paying the $250k+ I am looking for. I did get a decent offer from Amazon, but it’s so shady as mentioned above I passed on it.
I’m asking as a 40 year old how to get that interview with a top flight tech company and pass the resume screen. I think they have someone looking for graduation dates, and since PP has a recent grad date they get setup to talk to someone. My graduation date is not listed or is from a different century, so is THAT my problem? If I get a recent grad date will it get past the HR drone?
^^ NP working at FAANG. Easiest way to get past the resume screen is to have an internal referral. Any internal referral will do (e.g. doesn't need to be strong glowing recommendation directly to the hiring manager, at my FAANG you just submit a quick form to HR) -- it puts you in a different queue. Almost every candidate we interview comes this way.

How to get into one of these companies? Do I need to get a referral from someone who works there? I have a lot of DoD experience and clearance but not a SDE (as I am not working on cutting edge so I won't be able to compete ). Not sure what other jobs besides SDE I can do as I have a lot of analytical skills etc. Where do you look for FAANG jobs?
