Ignorance of the law is not a defense against breaking it.
Writing a huge check to a phony charity and then writing it off is just appalling. How could they not know that was illegal?

If you’re into superstition and omens, Congress has a statute that you need to avoid. In 1984, it codified the mark of the devil in the federal criminal code, 18 U.S.C. § 666.
Section 666 was designed to curb the evil of bribery related to federal funds. Prior to its enactment, another federal bribery statute, 18 U.S.C. § 201, was viewed by many courts to prohibit only the bribery of federal officials. In enacting § 666, Congress sought to protect federally funded programs from going into the red through theft and embezzlement by the direct bribery of federal officials. But it also made it a crime to commit bribery in connection with private citizens who have a relation to federally funded programs.

^^ turned out not that hard to find. Because the colleges deal with federal funds, bribing officials of those entities is a federal crime.

At this point, Loughlin and her husband know they are in trouble and are doing what they have to do to save their kids. If they admitted guilt that could implicate their daughters.
The prosecution has a strong case against them, they probably should have accepted the plea deal to save themselves but they weren't going to do that if it meant giving the prosecution something to use against their daughters.
Loughlin is acting. Yes, she is plenty worried because this is very, very bad for them as a family.

Wrong. Her bribe was orders of magnitude larger than the Huffman bribe (500K$) and she's been charged with money laundering as well. She may be rolling the dice with a jury, but either way, she's facing serious time.

If they wrote off the $ on their taxes isn’t there a requirement to list the 501c3 details? If they donated to a legit nonprofit why couldn’t they put that on their taxes?

I can tell most replies are not from lawyers. She has good counsel. She didn’t accept deal because it was not a good deal. People do not know a fraction of the facts and you will not until trial. If there actually is one. My guess is the bad facts for Huffman (having someone taking and submitting a standardized test) is a whole different thing then pretending to be an athlete. The American public is angry because Ms. Laughlin bought her daughters a spot at USC when she could have paid for the best academic prep, her daughters didn't need to go to college they had paid partnerships with Sephora and other prominent businesses--- connections that the general American people would love to have, her daughters bragged about not wanting to attend college for an education---how many of us lie awake at night thinking about the rising astronomical rising cost of a college education?! The Ameican people are outraged because too long have the privileged and wealthy told the mass populace work hard to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Meanwhile, they actually mean do as I say and not do as I do.
She has managed stupidly count on her privilege and looks both of which the FEDs and the Ameican people are outraged and disgusted by.
+1 She appears to have no moral compass.
