I don't know about Monterey in particular, but it's not that common to have school busses in California at public schools with budget cuts, etc. It's typically only required for special education students. Same in Colorado. Busses are available, but we pay $.50 per trip, which with three kids works out to $3.00/day $15/week $90/month. Lots of parents do drop off pick up to avoid the fees.
