Btw, that's what my grandmother when my mother was sexually assaulted in '81 (4 boys touching, 2 egging on). Police reminded every single boy in the group that it was sexual assault and if they were adults they would have been arrested. Scared them all, they apologized the next fall, and they started treating girls with more respect.

You must have missed the part where the poster was a women not a man...Some women are logical, mature, practical thinkers who don't get hysterical over every injustice and teach our daughters strength, character and maturity in the face of adversity recognizing that 12 year olds of both sexes do dumb things for which they need not be publicly castigated or hauled to jail.

I would be willing to bet that the principal wouldn't. Does your daughter have a yearbook so that she can see if she can find him in it?

It means my mother told me to stand up for myself. To make clear when an advance was unwanted. She didn't talk to the principal for me and call the police. So when I grew up and faced unwanted male attention in the real world I was able to handle myself.

So if a man slaps your butt today at work, how are you going to stand up for yourself? Are you not going to report him? Is that what OP should teach her daughter, that boys will be boys and it's ridiculous to make a big deal out of unwanted touching?

If a man slaps your butt at work, you report him to HR. If a 12 yr old boy slaps your butt, you hit him, yell at him, and let your parents/teacher know.

However a 12 yr old is not someone that the police need to be called in. They're all young and need to learn how to interact with the opposite genders. Its a learning opportunity for everyone.

I think there was a consensus that the police DO NOT need to be called, the question is whether the OP should inform the school and the boy's parents.

The principal absolutely needs to be contacted. The boy need to learn respect and that there are consequences to touching a girl that does not want to be touched.

This is my thought: the kids don't even know each other so the incident does not sound at all personal (it was an act of opportunity vs. Op's daughter being actively targeted). It's the end of the school year and kids were in high spirits and goofing around to the max. No - that boy should not have smacked anyone's butt, his buddies should not have laughed like they did. However, the likelihood that this will happen again to Op's daughter in particular seems very slim (the kids still don't know each other) UNLESS there is more going on here than Op's daughter is letting on I would probably just let it go. Maybe document it for your own records - date/time/details/witness names - so if there is a repeat, you'll have some facts written down.
