And the weird thing is: etiquette truly does not demand that you serve food at occasions hosted outside of meal times. So, they are the ones who are not correct, and yet they are really choosing this as their hill to die on. It's truly one of the oddest threads I've read here on DCUM.

I know! I truly cannot BELIEVE how many people feel so strongly about this?!?!?!?!?? It is just the oddest issue to me!!! It is like you are taking their binky away from them, or something, if they cannot have access to food or drinks for 1.5-2 hours. They are PANICKING!!

I wouldn't be using this time to make a stance. You know, the time when people have taken time out of their day to attend. When they have likely brought a gift.

I totally agree. The pp is just a poor host. You don't have to do pizza but stop being cheap and serve food.

Then offer up less and don't pretend to host a party. A party includes food, unless it's a frat party then it only includes drinks. If you're opposed to hosting a party and making your guests comfortable then don't say you throwing a party.

Grew up in the 80s and went to a ton of birthday parties. We didn't have basements but parties were generally in the back yard or the community room of whatever complex people lived in. There was always food. Always. Cake came after the food.

Even if we did, then why is that better? I like serving pizza and cake. We hosted a party last Sunday at laser tag from 2-4. They set the schedule, and it was pizza, game, cake game. Some of the kids there seemed absolutely ravenous and ate 2-3 pieces of pizza plus cake. It would have sucked it they had come that hungry, and I had no food for them. Even the parents were pretty happy there was food, and most of them had pizza and cake too. We are all running around on the weekends from activity to activity plus errands. Give everyone a break, and offer food at your party.


We'll just have to agree to disagree. You will get an invitation and then you can decide whether or not you'd like to come to our crappy parties. If not, no harm, no foul, but that's just how we do our parties. We'll miss you, but will still have fun! Bye!

Agreed. When the idea hits you to have a party, why would you start out all negative and think "I won't do this, I won't do that." If you are hosting a party and in the party planning spirit, you think about all the things you can and should do. What would make everyone comfortable? What would the child like? What did you like at parties you have been to? Not, "what's the least I can do and call it a party? Grumble Grumble." If there's no party spirit, no hospitality, no warmth, DO NOT THROW A PARTY.
