Burying the lede. Basically Daryl says the show was absolute trash and not an accurate portrayal at all. She finds it incredibly disrespectful and harmful that they portrayed her as doing Coke off a Kennedy family heirloom. She claims 1 she’s never done Coke and 2 she would never desecrate an heirloom like that.

I'm glad she's sticking up for herself because the show definitely does her dirty. And I would say that was true even if she had done Coke and desecrated a Kennedy family heirloom (I don't really care about Kennedy family heirlooms). They portray her as some kind of weird succubus who everyone, including JFK Jr., seemed to hate but who kept coming around anyway to torment them. It's really ridiculous. They dated for a while, he obviously cared about her. The just needed a villain for the show.

But I also wasn't watching the show like it's a documentary either. It's Ryan Murphy (or I guess Ryan Murphy adjacent). It's always heavily editorialized and amped up for drama. It think this show is only so-so, largely because the material is nowhere near as interesting as like the OJ trial or Truman Capote's ridiculous friendship with a group of socialites. The most interesting and dramatic thing about JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette was, sadly, the way they died. I don't even like the Kardashians, at all, and I've seen episodes of their reality show at the gym that have more drama than this entire series (other than, again, their tragic and untimely deaths, which have not yet occurred).

I was not loving the show but won't keep watching it after reading Daryl Hannah's NYTimes piece.

I thought it was well done.

I did. She looked like someone who was effortlessly beautiful. A total it girl. Granted, I was 10 years old when she passed away so I’m sure what appeared effortless to me actually required a lot of maintenance.

Except her face was far from beautiful. I’m actually shocked JFK jr dated her.

Many friends of hers and John's have said she was much, much more stunning in person. Maybe just didn't photograph well (believe she tried modeling early on, but maybe just not photogenic though gorgeous IRL).

People looked much more real in the 90s too. I love seeing how much more “flawed” celebs looked in the 90s, but it is pretty shocking how homogenous our facial beauty standards have become.

I think she was beautiful but one of those faces where a photo from a certain angle can freeze her in an angle that does not do her justice

This is so true. I'm 60-something so I lived through this as an adult. You have to understand that having "work" done on one's face and body was just not a common thing in those days. Face lifts, nose jobs, and maybe an eye lift or tummy tuck exisited, but were only for the wealthy, and even then, only much older weathly women. Fillers, botox, etc. just did not exist yet. So most people looked very natural. And I'm feeling very nostalgic for the days with no cell phones. Sigh.

That said, my 20-something daughter talked me into watching this (she said - "I have no idea who these people are - but I'm obsessed!") I told her that Jackie and JFK Jr. were Taylor Swift level of famous with photographers camped outside their apartments 24/7. I guess you could say that JFK Jr. and Carolyn were the Taylor and Travis of the 90s (fame-wise, not comparing them at all!). The protrayal of Jackie is really awful. The two leads aren't terrible, but it's hard to capture the charisma of JFK Jr. I think the Daryl Hannah actress has the hair and mannerisms down, but her face is just not as sweet and pretty as Daryl was when she was young. I told my daughter she should watch Splash - a great rom-com starring Daryl and Tom Hanks to see her in her prime.

We didn’t even have Botox!

Yep, Botox wasn't even approved for cosmetic use until 2002. Fillers were approved even later.

My sister and I wore those in the late 80s/early 90s!!!! Loved them!

+1 I still remember the first one I got for Christmas in 1991 or so. The J. Crew catalog was so exciting back then and the clothes were such good quality compared to now. I can literally feel the weight of that sweater. It would cost $400 for equivalent now.

I like the way they showed the rehearsal dinner and wedding—it all looked like the actual wedding photos had come to life.

I think they did a good job with this series. It’s much better than I expected.

Like others, I’m a Gen X gal who is enjoying the nostalgia for the 90s. Such a simpler time.

My kids will never know that friction, that anticipation, that fizzy sense of possibility. When I watch “Love Story,” I appreciate the fashion (I need Carolyn’s J Crew roll-neck sweater) and the music (Annie Lennox; I bow down). But I mainly feel wistful for Generation Alpha, who will never know the thrill of finding a dime for a pay phone or a note from a crush in their locker. They will never know the letdown of calling a friend and getting a busy signal, confronted with nothing but an empty, unplotted afternoon.

They are both self-centered & privileged & want the other to bend to their wishes. So both of them have to overcome the urge to bail on the relationship.
