Our private (NW DC) does NOT do virtual learning. You sure about that bird?

Do…you not know what the word “most” means?

I told my friends in the south that our snow is still not plowed, and the schools are still closed. He is shocked!! It has been days!! And the streets are still a mess?
Once in a lifetime snow and ice, come on!!

Private school teacher here.

Unfortunately, my street hasn’t been plowed yet. My driveway is nice and clear… but it takes me to an unpaved stretch of 300 feet. I don’t think my car can handle that, do you?

So I’m not at the bar or the gym. It’s nice that you’re able to get out, but you’re not the only person in this world.

So, like a lazy teacher, I’ve been grading papers at home. I’ve been conferencing with students about recent essays. I’ve been updating curricula. You know… like lazy teachers do when they are unpaid and working from home.

So the entire school community has to come to halt because you live on an unpaved road?

When will that be? Next Tuesday?
As I’m sure you can comprehend, if a critical mass of faculty/staff cannot get to school, school can’t open. There are MANY unplowed and totally boxed in residential roads, still. That’s why schools are closed. Not because teachers are “entitled.” Once enough roads are open such that sufficient staff can be expected to be able to make it in on time, school will open.

Calm down.

I’m not saying it is an easy cleanup but 24 hrs is already a lot of time for families and schools to handle it.

Considering how little snow we get most years, it doesn’t make sense to buy a huge number of plows that will mostly sit unused. This isn’t Boston.

I get that but it still shouldn’t take days!! 24hrs is plenty of time.

A snow plow is just a regular truck with a snow plow attachment in the front. Snow plows are usually not dedicated vehicles but just trucks where you add on that attachment. This is really not that expensive. These trucks get used year round for other things.

It did not stop snowing 24 hours ago, its only been 15 hours.

really? Epic? I walked to school without any issues.

Try to keep up. Many people are saying schools will be cancelled beyond Tuesday.

Perhaps you should consider the factors in this particular storm, instead of spouting your "expertise" from living in Michigan.

From the Capital Weather Gang:
"The defining feature of this storm was historic sleet, falling at uncommonly low temperatures. That combination — heavy sleet embedded in deep cold — created a storm that will prove far more disruptive and longer-lasting than a typical snowstorm.
Usually, when sleet falls, it does so in small quantities, often less than an inch, and at temperatures near freezing. But this storm spilled up to 4 inches of icy pellets, an amount unmatched since at least February 1994, and at temperatures mostly in the teens.
Falling atop 4 to 7 inches of snow, the frozen concoction consolidated to a depth of 6 to 9 inches. But this was no ordinary 6 to 9 inches. The water packed inside was comparable to the contents of a 20-inch blizzard. And with nighttime temperatures forecast to plunge into the single digits for days, the mass will remain frozen solid well into the week. There is no telling when this glacial-like offering will finally melt."

Thank you to the person who makes sense and quoted experts! I’m native to the area and every 10 or so years we get some sort of weird blizzard. This one was truly epic. In my 45 years here I have never seen it ice this dangerously.

Do you people hate your own children so much you have to pawn them off on the schools the minute you are inconvenienced. JFC. The entitlement here never ceases to amaze me. Side roads that are plowed in DC are barely passable in one direction. How do you suppose busses and carpools get through these neighborhoods? It’s as if some of you look out your own window and decide it looks fine from your castle so the rest of the world must experience what you do. The inability to consider any other scenario is so foreign to some of you that I’m astounded you’re precious littles even mix with the others.

So rude.

Wrong! Many are virtual.

Virtual the same as closed. We learned this during Covid

Except that your kids still have to log on and do work or are penalized.

But then they have to pay attention to them because the nanny is snowed in.

Go away. This isn’t your forum.

It’s not up to you whose forum it is. Per Jeff, anyone can post in any forum. They don’t even have to live in the DMV.

I walked past the kids' elementary school on my way home. Part of the sidewalk is a little icy but generally safe. Wisconsin is open. The Wisconsin sidewalk is generally safe, except that you have to walk slowly over the bumps of snow. Buses are running. Many kids are out. It is a beautiful day. At least for Northwest schools, Janney, Mans, Hearst, and Murch, I don't see how it is dangerous to go to school tomorrow.

My elementary-age kids go to one of those schools and have been walking there since yesterday to meet up with friends! Our car got plowed in, which was annoying, but it wasn't that hard to shovel it out. All to say, we probably could have had school today even and been fine ...

It is a beautiful day outside. Also, beyond driving, there are many options to go to these elementary schools which are near the metro.

How does one get to the metro. Wow there are a lot of people who have no idea the conditions throughout the DMV. Should a teacher walk five miles to the metro
lol

Walking. I did just that walk. It is totally doable. Many kids are out.
