All over this but I thought it was incredible in a good way—she was able to make this choice because of the number of Black kids on campus.

On the flip side, my kid is Hispanic, and her group of friends is very mixed, mostly in Greek system.

Are there very wealthy and White friend groups? I am sure.

Are they exclusive? Probably.

Are they exclusive because of race or income? Who knows.

We cannot afford their lifestyle, so my kid does not feel like she is necessary excluded because of her ethnicity. She is friends with some very wealthy people, but for the most part, her friends are public high school grads. She hasn’t complained at all about the racial balance at UVA.

Ditto to this. I also have a Hispanic daughter in the Greek system and is enjoying every minute of her UVA experience. She went to a lower tiered NOVA high school, and we cannot afford the super fancy lifestyle. Her friends are all public school kids. Lots of study hard and play hard weeks. During breaks she works long hours at her hometown job to have spending money at school. She is already dreading the day her UVA days are over!

Zero complaints!

Anyhoo, if the OP is looking for an honest answer to the vibe at UVA my kid would say out all all the stereotypes out there, the one she sees to be true is work hard, play hard. Everyone takes their studies very seriously and they are also super involved in the community as well whether it be the social scene, club sports, church, volunteering, etc etc….so many things to get involved in and most students are active and involved in something to their liking to balance out the “work hard.”

My kid couldn’t be happier!

It's bitter people who couldn't get in themselves, their children can't get in, their children aren't even a contender in the eyes of the high school college counselor (our situation with one child) or have loved ones who didn't get in. It's a great school at a great price. So people lash out. It's that simple.

And I agree with everything else you said. My one UVA kid there was blissfully happy. I asked her recently if she wants to go back and she said, definitely, hopefully for Law.

DP. I’m an alum and my kid doesn’t know yet whether she got in or not, so I’m definitely not bitter, but I often post in UVA threads to offer a measured opinion. It’s a great school and many, many will have a great experience. But the expectation that you will be “blissfully happy” there is a dangerous way to send your kid off to any school. I went off to UVA thinking I would be blissfully happy, but when it didn’t quite pan out that way, I spiraled a bit.

If it works for your kid, fantastic. But don’t assume everyone who has a less than glowing review got shut out.

No one is assuming that. Sorry you couldn't figure it out with 26,000 students and 700 clubs. That's on you, not on UVA. I didn't have a great SLAC experience but I don't beat up on it - and it got me into a T3 law school. So grow up. Your single experience doesn't matter to those applying who want to save $50K a year.

Except they are. The only reason I posted is because someone literally wrote “It's bitter people who couldn't get in themselves, their children can't get in, their children aren't even a contender.” It’s tiresome. UVA parents (particularly the NOVA ones) get so triggered at the suggestion that going to UVA isn’t the best possible thing that could ever happen to every 18 year old. They assume everyone is so jealous.

UVA seems like a great school, and has lots of loyal alums. Also, my kid and his friends didn’t visit, research, or apply there - they wanted to go further away. Back in the dark ages, I attended UNC OOS (which was a tough admit even then) and didn’t consider UVA.

Two things can be true - it’s a great school and also not everyone’s cup of tea for undergrad. DC applied for grad school, so may end up there yet.

Well, let's be honest: there are a lot more UVA rejects at Tech than there are Tech rejects at UVA.

There are plenty of students at VT who were accepted to both schools and chose VT. And I can absolutely see why.

Not really. Especially when so many VT kids were *also* accepted to UVA yet chose VT. That speaks volumes. But keep telling yourself whatever you need to.

I think this is a rare exception probably only in specific engineering majors. I don’t think there are “so many” who make this decision generally.

DP. I have two kids there right now who not only chose VT over UVA (and for liberal arts majors, not STEM) but who know quite a few others who did the same thing. Not sure why this would be surprising to you.

Same with my kids. This is perfectly normal, to normal people.

it’s not that simple when you realize that a) you have to get a job out of these institutions and that b) UVA is ranked 25/26 in the nation but VT is ranked 51. Compound that further by the fact that 80% of all students change their major at least over, so that sought after engineering admit becomes animal husbandry …

Ah, the usual dolt who refuses to acknowledge that VT has seven colleges to choose from, to include the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. My VT liberal arts grads had no problem whatsoever getting very good jobs with their degrees.

Exactly. “Legacy admissions” ended at UVA some time ago.

Perhaps it’s that same person who keeps mixing up UVA with Harvard? (and yes, Harvard still has legacy admissions up to 30% of each incoming class. [b]UVA does not
).

Last few years they had this connection to UVA supplement essays, that they got rid of this year.

You were supposed to say how your connection to UVA shaped you, then gave examples being a legacy, child of an employee, going to a UVA camp, descendent of a UVA slave laborer. It think this was a back door way to consider legacy in a different format.

My DD left it blank and Dean J said it wasn't meant to be a Why Us? essay and it was OK to leave it blank.

DP. You don’t have to tell them. Everyone knows it is much easier to get into VT as a humanities major than STEM. And everyone knows the job hunt for a humanities major out of VT will be more difficult. And everyone knows (test scores and GPA equivalent) it will be more difficult to get into law, med or grad school in the humanities out of VT.

You really need to stop parroting things about which you have no knowledge. My liberal arts VT grad and her friends have been having no issues whatsoever with grad school apps and employment offers. Your posts just reek of insecurity and ignorance.

Well, let's be honest: there are a lot more UVA rejects at Tech than there are Tech rejects at UVA.

There are plenty of students at VT who were accepted to both schools and chose VT. And I can absolutely see why.

Sure there are. But there are also more UVA rejects at Tech than vice-versa.

Your insecurity just jumps off the screen. Bless your heart.

All im saying is that there’s some truth to the good old fashion dig that the wahoos give out at the annual rivalry game.

+1
