As a younger woman (20s/early 30s) I always thought there was something a bit off about people who remained childless past the age of 40. going through my 30s and having my own children I have tried to reserve judgement and quash these feelings. But observing my own circle it seems the functional, successful ones all have kids and the ones with severe mental health issues or other life impediments have ended up childless.
I also wonder if it is a chicken and the egg thing- are the childless mentally unbalanced older women I know that ways because they never had kids? Or did they not have kids because of their own limitations?

Strange take. Look at truly trailblazing woman and you’ll find most of them did not have children. All the women I look up to in my life that I have learned the most from (two bosses, one aunt, a family friend, and a college professor) did not have children. It’s nearly impossible to be successful on a really big scale and follow your actual dreams if you have children.

Career does not equal success. A close knit family that is your life and legacy is success.

That is what you chose for yourself as your legacy. I’m very grateful to the scientists and researchers who devoted their life to saving the humanity with their advances and inventions. I kind of doubt you and your offspring ever accomplished a damn thing.

I tend to agree for the most part. I know there are people where life circumstances get in the way. I have an older, childless aunt but she was in a dangerously abusive marriage as a young woman, got divorced, didn’t date at all for around 10 years as a result, but did end up re-marrying in her mid 40s to a man who already had kids (albeit older), she is now in her mid 70s, still married, and loves being a step-grandma. There’s definitely some of that out there with the older generations. Also a lot of people who are middle class and couldn’t afford to treat their infertility issues.

But I do think with most people, it’s their own mental limitations that lead them to not have kids and most of them never seriously date or try to get married either. I wouldn’t say I judge it, but I’m also not going to take life advice from them. To me, they’re living in a state of perpetual adolescence with the same naive arrogance of your average 18-25 year old.

You are absolutely judging them. You are judging them because of your own intellectual and emotional limitations that prevent you from realizing that there is absolutely nothing wrong with not having children, whether by choice or because you are unable to biologically. I do judge and feel pity for people like you who simply can't imagine living a life that is at all different from your own.

I think this is just a difference of opinion. Humans are Primates, healthy ones want to pass on their genes. If you dont have that drive at all, then as a primate there is something wrong with you, you have lost some fundamental part of what makes humans human- we are animals. to me this person is plastic, artificial and maybe it is a judgement but there is science to back it up. someone who is satisfied completely with man made "things" and has no connection to nature is flawed, someone who does but knows that they will be an awful parent is so flawed that they recognize that they are flawed- why can't you recognize it acknowledge it instead of perpetuating the sort of life choices that parents might make that will damage their children so much that they won't want to perpetuate their genes which in an innate drive.
