I'm just asking about the politics and not whether this shutdown is wrong or bad for federal workers which is without question.
They didn't last time. And the thing is, there's nothing wrong with this CR. It had 1500 pages of bipartisan spending for various needed things, added by both Rs and Ds. There's no problem with this CR except that Musk tweeted that he didn't like it.
When your party is the cause of the shutdown you have to entice the other parties back to the table to negotiate and what you offer has to be worth it to them or make them look bad. That’s harder to do, when there was a deal on the table that offered things both sides wanted and many needed and you blow it up anyway. It’s harder still when you’re doing this near a major and usually expensive holiday. iAnother problem is the funding deadline does not come up out of the blue meaning there was lots of time to actually focus on getting this done.
Further, many people don’t realize the federal services that actually impact their lives, UNTIL things drastically slow down or come to a stop. It’s like a domino effect. Essential workers continue coming to work for a time (maybe) on the idea they will get back pay. However, their bills and daily lives don’t stop so eventually they too get frustrated. Who are they going to blame?
