Again $39 is the top wage. No one under 40 is making that. Several cites to this above. Speaking of which, where are the cites to the average longshoremen making $300k a year? Someone keeps insisting this is so. The math just isn’t there. Even at the top rate of $39 a hour with a ton of overtime they aren’t going much above 6 figures. Where did this myth begin?

"DEEP SEA LONGSHORE WORKERS – EARNINGS
During FY 2019-2020, deep-sea longshore workers (including checkers and special craft) were
paid $621,858,750.79, including regular overtime wages, vacation and holiday benefits. The chart
below reflects the earnings ranges of those longshore workers who perform work involving the
discharge or loading of general cargo vessels, and who comprise the “deep-sea register.” These
earnings, which are reported by the New York Shipping Association, Inc., do not include
additional container royalty payments.

EARNINGS RANGE # OF WORKERS
Over $450,000 18
$400,000 to $450,000 41
$350,000 to $400,000 82
$300,000 to $350,000 177
$250,000 to $300,000 347
$200,000 to $250,000 570
$150,000 to $200,000 851
$100,000 to $150,000 707
$75,000 to $100,000 267
$50,000 to $75,000 298

Awesome

Not a lot of workers

How do I get in to this line of work? What do I need to study or what physical things do I need to pass?

who can I do informational with or talk to about training or hiring cycles?

Do I need to bribe some long term shipyard owners or union workers? How much money?

Who is stopping you from applying? Sounds like a great job!

Any idea what number of years of service gets you to what level of pay?

Only 6 years of experience needed for the highest rate.

No COLA but there are 17 paid annual holidays plus vacation/sick leave, health care, generous retirement contributions and annual profit sharing.

No education or licensing requirements but you can only get an interview if the ILA has pre-approved you.

They turned down a 50 percent raise. They are demanding a 77 percent raise and no automation ever. And they will both destroy the economy and ensure a Trump victory unless their demands are met.

Biden should use his authority to fire them all and fast-track a modern automated port system like those used in Europe and Asia. The fact that a cabal of morons can stop nearly all trade in the US is a systemic failure that needs to be corrected. And Democrats need to stop pandering to unions. They're all Trumpers anyway.

F them.

Automate the ports completely and run them from a central station like other ports around the world.

Time to move into the 21st Century - this is a global economy.

$39/hour for a max salary is chicken scratch for what those people have to endure. That’s around $75,000-$80,000 a year for back breaking work where you always the risk of having your skull, legs, or back caved in by a shipping container. Shame on you for thinking they’re being greedy in their demands.

This thread really brings to light how phony these supposed “Democrats” are on this board. These “Democrats” on here are mostly neoconservative Republicans who have libertarian social and cultural views. Not Democrats in my book at all.

Thanks for making the case for automation.

The answer to how this works is found in the NY Shipping Association's 2023 Annual Report.

2/3 of the longshoreman, both in number of workers and in number of hours worked, get paid the highest rate. They also somehow work almost twice as much overtime as regular time.
