They seem to think that School Board members aren't elected officials, who are specifically supposed to bring their opinions and positions to the role. With something like the Kaiser debacle, do they really think it's inappropriate to say "yeah, whoever was in charge of this screwed it up, and voters and their elected officials have a right to expect better"?

The real issue is that DP and CDT represent a school of thought that everyone is on the same team, and their goal should be to handle everything "in house" with as little criticism as possible. Then everyone can get together and sing a happy song about what a good job they've all done.

I can think of no better example of this than when they put the superintendent on the dais with the rest of the board. The superintendent is an employee of the board, and literally everything that the staff brings forward should, on some level, be viewed as an expression of the superintendent's performance. He is the only one the SB can hire or fire, and it's his job to make things work in alignment with the board's priorities. Instead he's up there with them acting like he's one of the gang rather than down with the staff acting like the person coordinating everything.

Anyone who comes in with the sense that APS isn't already perfect, or on autopilot on the way to becoming perfect, is going to get attacked for "criticizing staff" (every APS initiative starts with staff work, so if you criticize almost anything you can call it criticizing staff) or "failing to seek consensus" (IOW, failing to agree with the in-crowd). The SB should be a responsive institution that reflects the will of its voters, not an insular club that shields the rest of APS from accountability.

Also, I don't get the impression that the Hispanic community in general follows SB or SB politics all that much. That seems to be primarily a non-poor liberal white activity.

I don't think that's true because the Hispanic block always puts up a candidate and they always win.

That's ACDC putting up those candidates. The general Hispanic parent population isn't following SB politics. They're focused on their kids in their schools.

No what had to happen was a community outcry. That happened. Then the scheme collapsed.

I honestly think it could have all been avoided without the drama. Mary just needed to assert herself, say something to her colleagues, post her message without even hinting what was going on and then leave the others to potentially embarrass themselves if they tried this stunt.

I talked a few people “in the know” and it was pretty clear that they wanted the community outcry/people writing emails because they themselves still had to work with the rest of the board and didn’t want to face the ire themselves. They wrote zero emails and enjoyed the show.
