DC is deciding between UCONN and RPI for Aerospace Engineering

Accepted:
UCONN RD
RPI EA
WPI EA (deferred and accepted RD)
Embry-Riddle RD
Clarkson RD
NJIT EA
RIT RD

Rejected:
Georgia Tech RD (obviously LOL)
Lehigh RD
Purdue EA (deferred and rejected RD)

Waitlisted:
Stevens EA
VTech EA
Rutgers EA (in-state)

Received merit aid from all but NJIT (which is in-state tuition). Merit from Clarkson was very generous, but UConn almost the same price since the OOS tuition is lower than private tuition.

His stats were really banal and we are pretty happy:
3.29 UW GPA at time of EA (higher now, he's done great senior year)
34 ACT
3 APs
not an athlete, some interesting ECs like flight lessons.
I guess his essay was good.
North Jersey top public HS

WVU

Direct admit to selective program with lots of Merit aid.

Super excited DC, super proud parents.

Hope they dont want to do math. Apparently WVU will be the only R1 university that doesn't offer a masters or phd in math.

Weird assumption.

Nope. Headed for a BSN (with the potential goal of NP).

Are they giving dc a full ride?

How do they do with MD admissions?

Not entirely free but it will be very cheap. We actually called and spoke to admissions and department chairs, and they were able to give specific examples and numbers of kids who went on to med and dental schools, including which schools. They school is small and so they were able to call that information quickly. They were very responsive.

They also have a PT school onsite and a PA (with a direct admit route). The PA school is actually ranked well (for those who are concerned with that).

Kid got into higher ranked schools but decided to shine in a small pool, do honors, and have lots of money left for the post-grad path.

What are they majoring in? I have an arty kid so exploring options. Have already visited Pratt and RISD. Looking for other possibilities to add to the list.

It’s been a long week-sorry!

It does go back to there can be crime anywhere. You never know.

There are places where crime is more frequent. For example, I don’t know that I would consider temple or Penn as the parts of Philly they are in have particularly high crime rates.

Yep. I don’t think it’s fair to take one instance of a serial killer (super rare but could happen anywhere) and a targeted crime in which a student was the target/victim (which could also happen anywhere and to anyone) and say that shows that a university/city is a violent, crime-filled place.

Three students at UVA were killed in 2022, 32 at VA tech in 2007, 3 at Michigan state last year…does anyone say “oh those are dangerous campuses”?

The point is that these so called random crimes are more common than an attack from a homeless person or because one attends an urban school. The most likely person to commit a crime against a student is another student.

Headed to the USCGA. Happiness level is a 20/10.

Glad they are over the moon. I remember you posted about the USNA acceptance that was hard to turn down.

He came around pretty quickly.
