Some school systems have a student rep on the board. APS doesn't. I think APS could use that perspective. Kids know a lot and have great opinions.

Do you understand the difference between an student rep and an actual board member? I'm not sure you do. I do believe that your kids understand the system better than you.

Since APS doesn't have a student member, maybe the 22 year old is the next best thing.

If he had gone through the APS school system himself, had siblings still in the system, was local, or had a preschooler ready to start here, any ties at all… then maybe. Since he’s an outsider intending to use this position for his own short term gain, with absolutely no stakes here, the answer is a resounding NO.

In APS you will be one of just five votes, one of five people in a discussion. Every person on the board has to bring something--we're stuck with them for four years. All I know of MT is what I've seen on AEM. Have only ever seen her respectfully engage, answer questions even when people were piling on and ganging up (going so far as to call her racist). Even one of her fiercest detractors on there is now a supporter. Didn't have that on my 2023 bingo card.

Poor judgment, at best.

I remember folks in ape were ugly in those early months. But AEM was and still is full of bullies. I stick around for the crazies who never disappoint. Keep showing us who you are.

But most people look back and see how awful that was all around. A lot of people did not rise to the challenge. Some still are not. I’m willing to give MT a chance to make her case.

Does AEM have anyone running for SB? Not sure why they’re relevant here.

Somehow, many of us made it through the pandemic without trashing teachers/staff or screaming over other parents.

You have to admit that when anyone pointed out (on AEM) that teachers and school staff were getting priority in vaccinations in early Jan 2021, but still didn’t want to return to the classroom (long before grocery store and other *already* public facing professions got their turn), they *were* in fact, shouted down.

She was certainly comfortable with that behavior - she still *chose* to work closely with those people for years. At least one helped significantly with her last campaign (and is on her current website). She now says she’s “proud” of that work?

Most of Arlington has moved on. Look at the people endorsing her. Look at her opponent’s ape-light platform. I don’t know MT but seems unfair to ask her to be accountable for the worst of other parents’ behavior during the worst part of pandemic. From their newsletter and people who speak at SB meetings, ape’s tone and focus has shifted. If she had a hand in that, that sounds like leadership we need. Feel free to hold grudges for other people’s behavior, but looks like people are moving on.

I hold her accountable for her choices. No one forced her to partner with those people. She was obviously ok with their actions.

I don’t want a SB member who think it’s ok to bully teachers/admins/parents.

I believe he is advocating for student members with voting power for the school board like in Fairfax and Montgomery Counties. Depending on his other positions, Ang may have a decent shot for the nomination. He has no enemies and is a blank slate with some fresh ideas.

For the love of poodles, AEM is nothing but a Facebook discussion group filled with everyone. That is it - it is not an actual group. APE OTOH is a very organized group - incorporated and fundraises and has a regular newsletter, puts out press releases etc. Miranda willingly chooses to associate with the bullies and right wingers in APE.

I am sick of seeing these two conflated. Apples and potatoes.

“Associate with” is doing a lot of work here. Could you point to the times that Miranda personally did something objectionable? Also, could you point to the specific official APE positions that you take offense to?

I continue to think Miranda Turner is an excellent candidate, and I agree with PP above saying it's unfair that she is associated with the worst of APE. She also aggressively went after anyone who even slightly disagreed with her on that AEM Facebook group, so let’s not pretend like she was guaranteed the nom otherwise. You obviously enjoy making up your own facts anyway.

I can name the posters on AEM who aggressively and rabidly go after people who disagree with them and are still doing it.

The owner of the group also created a fake account back in 2020/2021 and posted under it for months until someone finally called out the fake account on AEM after it was first exposed here.

So to sum up, any single person running for school board that has the backing of people defending AEM are horrible candidates and who associate with nasty self righteous people.
