Agree 100%. Middle school teachers and parents in FCPS have been saying this for years. I'm one of the PPs whose kid is at one of the TJ feeder schools and he's barely alive in the mornings even though he loves school. I don't want him missing weeks of classes if he gets Covid but I certainly don't care if he skips 1st period PE once in awhile and goes to school late.

NP. We are very different. I let mine sleep in today when I saw it was an early dismissal. He’s also taking high school courses in middle school. Instead of worrying about missing a day, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to not have to catch the 6:40 bus. He’s not sick. I don’t think this will affect college admissions. I’ve never understood the parents who think school can’t be missed.


Some parents teach their kids that school is important.


DP I am an Asian double Ivy grad so… yeah I know. But mental health, spontaneity, and occasional fun are important too!

I know parents who rarely took their kids anywhere (even before Covid) out of a fear of them getting sick and missing school. I mean, you do you but… I’d rather enjoy life a little and take the chance…

I’m the poster who let my kid sleep in yesterday. I’m not going to state my race or education because it’s not relevant. My son catches a bus at 6:40 every day. 6:40. So yes, I do not feel any guilt about letting him sleep in yesterday. He checked Schoology and completed his assignments while I was at work. They were done before I got home. I really think I’m modeling balance and responsibility. He still needed to get his work done by a deadline even if he wasn’t physically there. It’s not like he slept in and then did nothing.


He could have slept in on Friday.


He did today too.


So since he was already getting one day off, why did you feel he also needed Thursday off? Did he need a mental health day or what?

NP. Totally, unequivocally agree. The middle school start times are ridiculous and I always give my kids the option of just staying home when there is an early dismissal day. It's absurd to catch a 6:40am bus only to rush through an abbreviated day and get out early. No point whatsoever. Those days - IMO - should either be whole days off or full days of school. I let my high schoolers do the same, if they want. I find it so typical that these busybodies would care either way what decisions parents make for their OWN kids, especially when they don't affect anyone else. So bizarre.

To which post are you replying?


They were responding to my post and trying to be snarky. A lot of people have a huge issue that I let my son occasionally miss school on a half day (1 time) and do his work at home instead of catching the insanely early 6:40 bus. I’m not sure why that triggered so many.

DP. No. You're supposed to be in person unless you're out due to illness. I don't care/ don't disagree with the people who let their kids miss school once in awhile to sleep in, but you're not allowed to just keep your child home indefinitely because the work is posted on Schoology. That said, there's really nothing FCPS can do about it unless you miss more than two consecutive weeks.

DS reported that his special Ed teacher didn’t mask. Unfortunately, another kid in class threw up on her. A mask isn’t going to stop the vomit, but I’d take any protection I could get around a stomach bug.

We were 100% unmasked at our PD today. Principal said we could work from an alternate location. PD was done on Zoom.

My school was closer to 50/50, as well. At least 40-50 of our 90-100 staff were masked. We seemed to self-segregate so the masked staff sat on one side of the room and the unmasked staff sat on the other side of the room.
