The family I worked for went away to a covid hotspot for 3 wks, didn't want to quarantine when they came back, were late paying me for the hours worked before they left. They did not have a nanny when they returned, and yet somehow, I was the bad guy in that scenario.

Do you want her to guarantee her availability? If so, then you guarantee income. If you don't care if she's still available when you get back, then don't pay and take your chances.

Of course you pay!

Their bills don't go on vacation when you do.

If you don't pay, don't expect them to be available upon your return.

What? Why would someone force their employees to take vacation the same time they do? If my nanny *wants* to use her vacation time the same week that we are on vacation, awesome! That would be fantastic. But given that she has her own life and time off priorities, she is welcome to take her "much-needed time off" at a time that works for her, not me.

DP but if I could live without childcare for that many weeks per year, I wouldn’t need a nanny.

It's not. It's standard. Nannies with six weeks of vacation written into their contract are uncommon.

I’ve seen it done that nanny gets two paid weeks of vacation- one week her choice, one week your choice.

yes absolutely. if you want a good nanny that is a non-negotiable. you can however ask them to coordinate their summer travel with yours.

How would you expect her to pay her bills while you are away if you aren’t paying her? You have to pay her - that’s the price you have to pay when you hire someone.

Yeah, that's not how it works. My housekeeper gets her own vacation and bonus. That way she can take time off when it's convenient for her and not be beholden to my schedule. She is happy to come in when I'm away. Win/win.

We pay of course and do not require her vacation days to coincide with hers (another scam some employers do.) When we had a nanny - even if we didn’t ask her to come while we were away she’d almost always come and organize closets and play room or switch seasonal toys. Our housekeeper is using this week we’re gone to concentrate on different areas of the house and pantry and closets. She won’t work as many hours but we’ve almost always scheduled whole house window washing service on our vacation week so come home to extra sparkling house: so nice and more than worth the false economy of cheating an employee.

When you have a regular part-time or full-time household employee, you pay them when you are gone.
