The rule of 3 is right. I often read DateLab in WaPo, and it frustrates me to no end how many people rate the date as a 4/5 but don't want a second date because they "didn't feel a connection" immediately. No wonder they're still looking for a partner.

A good conversation or a few things in common is worth exploring, single people!

He would be fired for sexual harassment at my company. If you ask someone out once, especially at work, and are told no but persist anyway, it’s unwelcome attention, ie, harassment.

This story is from a previous generation; I think from the 1950’s or early 60’s. A young intelligent woman is studying to be a biologist and she’s reading a scientific article on the bus. Her seat mate is very talkative woman and they start to chat. The seat mate say “I know the perfect man for you”. They keep in touch and the new friend introduces her to this man who is also a scientist and also Jewish. They hit it off and get married. Both of them get PhD’s. I know their son, who is also a PhD scientist.

Ummmm..this isn't at all appealing to me as cute, based on your description. He starts hitting on someone ("immediately") at work? That's inappropriate and shows a lack of self-control. And also, it was only because of her looks?
Then the man continues to ask for 2 years? Does not accept the woman's refusal for 2 years? Also creepy/smothering.
She finally says yes...and they live happily ever after? I don't begrudge them their 35 years of marriage, but being married for 35 years doesn't necessarily mean it's been romantic enough to offset the weird 2-year beginning.
PP, is this your own 'love story'? If so, you need to work on your delivery. The man in question doesn't sound at all appealing enough for a 'cute love story.' Maybe there are a lot more layers (e.g. 'after two years, they had worked through so many tough times at their organization that she saw how adversity brought out his strong traits; and by then they had uncovered so many common interests that she saw him as her soul mate"). But that's not what you wrote, so ...it doesn't come across so well.


Not mine, it's my accountant. I don't mind if you don't like it. I was trying to keep it short and sweet.

Literally the same situation happened to me. My future wife told her roommates that, in her words, she met "a really nice, cute guy, at orientation, and I will never see him again."

A year later, a grad school classmate of mine and got talking, and put 2 and 2 together... (24 years later,), 4 years of dating,, 19 years married..

This is an old family story but grandparents who met at age 5–they each would walk to church with their parents. Grandfather had a long walk from a different town, so had found a big stick to use as a walking stick and hid it under the church stairs during mass. Grandmother found it, took it for herself, and he started chasing her around the church (remember he was five). Her joke was “he’s been chasing me ever since.” They became childhood sweethearts and he saved up to buy her a promise ring at 16 — her parents thought they were too young to be courting, so he gave her the ring in secret. They married when they were 24, after he finally had a good job, and were together until she died in her 70s after a battle with cancer that he nursed her through.

Have a friend who married her first boyfriend who was a lab partner in grad school who was smitten right away with her smarts. They have been married over 40 years and often collaborate on research together, although they have separate labs. They are moderately famous in their field as a husband and wife duo at the top of their research area globally and still as happy together as ever. Their kids are all in Stem research as well.

My husband and I first met as kids, we were in Sunday School together. He was a sweet little boy with a puppy love crush on me and I was a late bloomer who was clueless and not interested. Well FF about 20 years later and we're working together. The funny thing is I didn't recognize him right away. I spotted him my first day of work, we were parked near each other and I was instantly attracted to the tall ,dark and handsome fellow parked beside me. I believe my actual thoughts were " I need to get to know him."
I did get to know him, and after a few days I remembered him. He remembered me right away but didn't admit. We did eventually have the I know you talk. Didn't date right away, both worried about the dating at work thing. We eventually gave in and have been together now for 8 years married for 5.

I had a test-tube romance with my husband, whom I met in a research lab studying Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase in mice. He proposed on the second date.

The couple met at a wedding, the man was the best man and the woman was the maid of honor. The best man asked the maid of honor to marry him that night. She declined, but they did start to date. Were engaged within 6 months and married within a year. Still together after 45 years.

Numbers aren’t inflated. I know his actual number and lowers it significantly because I didn’t want people saying it was BS.He is good friends with DH and we have been on vacation with him where he would hook up with 2-3 woman a day.


He sounds gross


Never lied, never cheated, always used protection and a clean health card. Less gross than most people with 10-20 partners.
