Lol this is such a dumb standard for the treatment of dogs. A dog is not the same as a toddler.

I follow someone on instagram who has a service dog for PTSD and severe psychiatric disassociations. She's training a new dog so she talks a lot about the process and how her dog knows when something is wrong with her. It seems to be all about the scent in her case. Her body producing cortisol or whatever other chemicals and hormones that she emits when having an attack (I'm not doing justice in describing this) are what alert her dog to distress.

Therefore, my unscientific assumption would be that dogs can tell when it's faked. Even untrained dogs can sense the lack of authentic change in your body.

Agree with this. We don't give them enough credit for detecting our true feelings during a simulation.

I had a Boston Terrier and one night around 2am, someone was at our front door trying to open it. My dog leapt off the foot of my bed barking ferociously and ran downstairs. He stood at the front door barking like crazy until the person left. What's funny is that he had a really loud, deep bark that made him sound like a much bigger dog. In reality, he was a little 20-lb meatball who liked to snuggle.

Based on that incident, I'd like to think my dog would've attacked the guy if he'd managed to get in, but who knows.

I'll never forget when I fell down a flight of stairs and my dog stood there wagging her tail.

I was laying there in a heap at the bottom of the stairs thinking, "my dog clearly hates me" while she was probably thinking "mom is playing a fun new game!"

My dog barks like crazy when someone comes to the door or a stranger comes in. Won’t bite but barks loudly.

I’ve tried to fake incapacity with my dog and he ignores me. I have also walked him in my neighborhood and then closed my eyes to see if he would lead me home. He definitely knows which way is home and once he reaches the house, he will refuse to continue on. He pulls me right up the driveway.
