Used to shop at JCrew( quality went downhill), free people, anthropologie, Patagonia, REI.
Trying to see where to buy cheaper casual stuff with good quality.


Old Navy is similar quality to JCrew.

This. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with the quality and prices at Target, this line in particular.


I assume you mean Universal Thread? If so, I agree 100%. Almost all of my basics come from that line-I like a little stretch in my tops (big boobs) so their blend is perfect for me (although they do have a lot of 100% cotton stuff).

I was going to add this, as someone who also needs to shop frugally. I have worked to wean myself off ON items due to the poor quality, though they do have good shorts and decent leggings/athletic wear. LL Bean is still an aspirational price point for me, LOL. Eddie Bauer is right in the middle due to frequent discounts and I've been happy with what I've purchased there in the last 1-2 years, particularly a fantastic winter coat.

To me, Eddie Bauer reminds me of Lands End 10+ years ago. I haven't shopped at LE in years due mostly to really poor style/choices.

LL Bean has great quality and many of their clothes are designed to last. I used to stay away from them because it’s a very “middle aged mom” brand, but I recently had to acknowledge that… I am a middle aged mom! I’m still not going to buy pants/jeans there as I think they look a little dowdy. And I prefer buying tees from Madewell or Nordstrom, which are a bit more stylish. But for practical outer layers (sweaters, sweatshirts, fleece), LL Bean is great. I try to shop the sales because the stuff I like there tends to be pricier. Already have a fleece jacket picked out to buy during their Labor Day sale (last year the discounted most things up to 20%).


This. Huge difference in quality and style between LL Bean and Old Navy.

Why are you putting these two stores in the same category? Did you mean to say LL Bean and Land's End?

LL bean and Land's end are both excellent for durable basic items, and kid items for things that they really put a lot of wear and tear on.

Old Navy activewear is great, esp. for the price. I'm hard on my workout clothes so don't want to pay Lululemon prices (I also find good workout stuff at TJ Maxx/Marshalls).

Regular clothes at ON have been on a downward slide for a while (recently bought some maternity stuff and the decrease in quality from when I was last pregnant 5 years ago is astonishing), but they stock a lot of Tall size shirts online so I end up ordering from them pretty frequently as I have a long torso. Gap carries Tall, too, but I can't tell you the last time I saw anything there I actually liked.

OP, what kind of stuff are you shopping for? If you're patient, Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx/Marshalls can be great places to find name-brand jeans and nice sweaters.

I've always worn stuff from LL Bean - mostly their plain colored tshirts and their sweaters. And fleeces/coats. Recently, I discovered these pants and have been living in them:

Obviously I'm not a monster, so I don't tuck my shirts into them, but they are super cute and comfortable and the zip pockets are great.


Lots of reviews state pilling as an issue. Have you had that? Also... I admit to a load of butt “texture”; think the fabric is enough to keep things looking smooth?
