During Covid, I wouldn't assume anything at all... They could have sent the kid to a state that was more aligned with their covid/school preferences. They could have used the opportunity to travel more since school was online. Parents could have been overwhelmed and sent to grandparents for a while (I seriously considered this in the darkest days).

Pre-covid, my dd had a couple of friends 'disappear' in MS and HS (but not for 9 months exactly) and the assumption (sort of confirmed after, at least via rumor) was that they were mental health/substance abuse issues.

I know someone whose son was expelled for selling drugs and went to some sort of boarding/alternative school.

PP here who’s hometown has a high teen pregnancy rate. They go to their public high school throughout the pregnancy and then some do cyber school.
