I only compared W&L to UF because someone was relentlessly touting UF and someone said no one cares about W&L.

I've lived in NC and TX and I don't think UVA would be generally held above UNC or UT by people there.

I’m from the Midwest, and I obsessed/continue to obsess about this because I hated K-12 so much.

These schools are probably all roughly similar in terms of overall educational quality and quality of serious students.

But W&L and Wake Forest would probably appeal more to people with strong roots in the South; Tulane might appeal more to kids from up North who just want a good school in a fun place.

My guess would be that UF is probably stronger than UVA for the hard sciences, but that UVA might be stronger for students in the humanities and social sciences.

Emory seems as if it would be great at everything but not spectacular at anything other than premed subjects.

It was years ago. It has dropped a little over the years while UF and FSU have improved.

The change is mostly due to Florida’s population growth forcing state schools to be more selective. Miami has more out-of-state students, so they haven’t benefited as much from the growth. For in-state students, the difference in the price-to-value ratio is substantial between Miami and the top state schools.
