It is possible to do high intensity interval training (HIIT) with a mask. I wasn’t thrilled, as a vaccinated person, to have to put my mask back on for HIIT, but I have, and I haven’t died. My kids do their sports in masks, when required. This is life until we have vaccine mandates and get COVID under control. I will happily have my kids do sports with masks rather than have them have no access to sports at all. It tends to be the most privileged that have continued to have access to sports (ASU, travel) while everyone else has been so sidelined. I am hoping this fall/winter will result in better public policy choices, and better outcomes for kids who aren’t in pay-for-play sports. If that means kids in masks, so be it.

I don’t care if adults have to wear masks-indoors or outdoors—as long as the kids playing don’t have to wear masks.

Because fall 2020, Parks and Rec required masks for outdoor sports, for spectators and for coaches at all times, and for kids while going to and from the field. They also mandated social distancing while on the bench of 10'. This applied to practices and games. In South Riding police were being used to enforce the rules with the health department going around taking pictures.
These rules were lifted midway through the spring 2021 season.

These rules were ridiculous when implemented, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them do it again.

SOLO in Loudoun rec league didn't require masks last winter.

DD played AAU with tournaments/leagues starting in winter and ending in June. Masks and covid procedures were different depending on the venue. Some strict with masks, others no masks, and a lot in between. She didn't care as long as everyone played under the same rules.

Yes? But last winter there were no vaccines and cases were much higher, and schools were closed. Completely different situation.

I guess you haven't been reading much if you really think this winter would be any different than last. The delta variant has 1000 times the virus load of the variant we were dealing with last winter. It's much more contagious.

Cases are already rising and could potentially match what we had before because even in the DMV, we have an ignorant 30% who are refusing to get vaccinated and are serving as incubators for COVID mutations.

Leagues should demand that players old enough to get vaccinated show proof of vaccination.

Because I was a parent of a kid involved in these activities. Specific volunteers were permitted to the games so saw first hand.

AAU players are a very small number of kids compared to the kids who participate in community rec leagues and leagues like FYCBL. FYCBL had about 25% of their normal number of teams. The people sitting out, is because of fear of covid, as well as not liking the restrictions. Two different groups, and the league can't really cater to both, and kind of ends up losing both.

The kids we know who just LOVE basketball were willing to play in masks even though they hated the masks. The kids we know who were more casual players sat out the season for various reasons.
