I am always stunned at how much DCUM parents care about "what is cool." Didn't you people get over that in middle school? I expect pushback from kids but not adults. Honestly, I wonder if everyone on here has PTSD from their youth or if it is just some kind of arrested development?
OP, there are a lot of masks that strap around the back of the head. Many adults wear them as does my teen (who has plenty of friends!). They might it the bill.

NP. It’s good to a degree but help out your kid. A 10 yo is very different than a 14 yo. It’s okay for a parent to nudge the 12 and 14 yo to ease off the lanyards before school starts. This isn’t about style or coolness. A lanyard on anyone who doesn’t have a severe disability or medical condition at this age is ridiculous.
Aside from style/coolness, why is it ridiculous to use a lanyard if you will be in a situation where you will be putting on and removing your face mask multiple times throughout the day? I'm honestly asking, because as an adult I have used one and find it useful. I think sticking a used mask in my pocket and pulling it back out multiple times is more annoying and feels less sanitary. I understand if other people don't feel the same way, but I'm surprised you think it's a ridiculous choice -- can you explain?
If they are required to use one in school, they won’t be taking it on and off multiple times per day. It’s like wearing sports googles so they won’t fall off while running while sitting in class. The only place it will be off is at lunch and they have to carry backpacks around everywhere. Stick it there is they don’t have pockets. A lanyard on a teen in school is silly.

My take on this is that it’s less a thing about being cool or not and more a thing about parents kind of being oblivious that teens are not little kids anymore that need mom to pick out rain boots and backpacks and lanyards for them. Just ask the teen what they want. You don’t even need to figure out for them what might be cool or not. No need to come on here and ask other parents for advice.

I crocheted one with single chain stitch. Then realized it's choking hazard for 9 year old. For a teen would be great.
