Will the dad actually take him though? The center isn’t always the closest school. In my neighborhood, the schools weren’t selected. The closest one is a 20 min car ride.

If I knew my kid wasn’t wanted or welcome I wouldn’t send them. This is awful for the poor kid.

What does he actually mean by can’t afford it? Everyone seems to think he means food but I sorta doubt it.

The correct answer is that the furniture store needs to pay a competitive wage, which will increase the delivery cost to an appropriate level

The summer program is provided by the USDA. The schools are only the distribution site. Food is provided for any child 2-18 years old. Any county resident can go to the any school in the county they reside in and pick up food for the child. For the exact distribution details including which days and for how many days you can pick up for, consult the school district web-site. But, since this is a USDA program, it is open to any resident and not tied to school enrollment.

There is zero excuse for a parent not to be able to provide for their child. Even if you are unemployed, you can locate the nearest USDA food distribution site, find out the pick-up information and get free food for your child.

At this point in time any person claiming to have trouble finding a job to meet basic needs such as food and housing is being too picky, not actually looking or just lazy. He could get a job as a server at a busy restaurant and make bank at this point.

It's not clear who OP is in this situation and what all OP knows about available resources and custody situation (whether baby daddy even wants custody, etc.)
But if he "can't" find a job, he just isn't trying all that hard. Shameful.

I think this is a set up for a very traumatic month. The kid likely won't starve but the kid likely won't be treated well.

+1 This is lose-lose for the poor child. He will feel unwanted if he goes or if he doesn't.

You don't know the entire situation but there are plenty of free options to get food. He will not qualify for food stamps for the child, maybe himself without custody.
