Can someone clue me in on how people make swim practices from 9-10am (or even later) happen with summer camps etc?

i worry though about my kid falling behind, the first week seems important. should i consider investing in a wetsuit?

Our pool is pretty laid back about these practices when the water is cold. They know that’s how kids quit forever so they don’t push it.

Our club's pool heater broke, I feel so sad for the swim team kids this week!

In my experience, those make me even colder. The wet fabric clings to my skin and it’s miserable.

i actually recommend the double shirt for this. but that might make it harder to swim in practice. honestly, the answer may just be to hold your kid out the first week if you are worried.

You think it's 70, or it's been measured at 70? Big difference. Mine complained about how cold it was, but it measures at 85 (it's been heated all winter). That still feels cold when it's cold and rainy out, especially to skinny little kids. But it's good for swimming in cold weather, too warm in warm weather.

Ours is heated and opens May 1st

Yes. Try a better pool or maybe a Div 1 swim team if your kid can cut it.

It was upper 50s for two days, with rain and overcast. Today is mid 70s. Tomorrow will start to heat up, with overcast and rain though. There's no way an unheated outdoor pool can be warmer than 70-75 degrees, and probably on the lower end of that. That's freaking cold.

Ours is heated, that's why I asked, and for those that can actually read: it's heated.

We moved to the Pacific Northwest. Our pools are open year-round but there are a few that wait until the first week of May. Summer swim team started a couple of weeks ago. The water is pretty warm but the air is typically in the low 50s-low 60s with a couple of random hot days until our “real” summer starts in July.

Here’s what we do:
1. Sweats and swim parkas until the very last minute
2. Caps are a must! Try a silicone cap; put it on in the locker room or in the car to hold in the heat.
3. Get in immediately and move. No clinging to the wall, shoulders and head immersed immediately.

Our coaches keep the kids moving and minimize chatter/instructions for the first few laps. I have a skinny 6 yo and they are fine. We don’t talk about the cold and don’t make it a thing, and that helps. I have a snack with a ton of calories ready for right after and in the winter we crank the seat heaters and let the kids sit on them in the parking lot before they get into their boosters to drive.

Yes, when ours were little we used wet suits. Now they don't care.

Lots of local pools are heated as necessary.

Our kids swam all winter at heated outdoor pools in the area; Army-Navy, Merrimack, and the JCC in Rockville. Swimming in the snow is one for the scrap books!
