If I leave my window open the birds can wake me up as early as 4am. I close the window and go back to sleep. But, no. Bird sounds are not beautiful at 4am.

Like OP's kids, I can't sleep through early morning birdsong. I love birds. I love sleep. I love birdsong - just not in the early morning hours. There would be no lying in bed until I "fall asleep again" - once I'm awakened in the morning, I'm up for the day unfortunately.

True story--my 4yo came in this morning saying the birds woke him up and we should "chop the trees down to stumps so they'd go somewhere else to wake other people up in the morning."

I said no. and he had the classic response. "Why?"

Have any of you ever had young mockingbirds who sing in the wee hours of the morning outside a bedroom window (as early as 4 am)? They practice when other birds are not singing and their calls can pierce through sound machines and AC so it does wake folks up. I have had guests complain and ask if we can put up owl or hawk silhouettes to discourage them from hanging around. We just offer headphones or ear plugs.

Thank you. I just commented to my spouse that I can’t believe that there are three pages of people complaining about birdsong. I can’t imagine anything nicer than hearing birds singing each morning.

I don't see 3 pages of complaining. Looks like the majority of posters are giving OP ideas on how to help her kids stay asleep.
I'm one of the PPs who mentioned a sound machine. I personally love to hear the birds in the AM. Doesn't bother me a bit!

Don't songbirds stop singing around August?

I really like my Honeywell air purifier. It is primarily for my allergies, but it gives a low level white noise that really helps me sleep. I have tried the DOHM sound machines but I feel like those are too loud for my liking.
