As a Laura who posted, pronunciation is really not an issue, in my 44 years of life. People from NJ/Long Island pronounce it "Lah-ra," but I'll answer to that.

The difference between "Lore-a" and "Law-ra" is so neglible. I'm always surprised when pronunciation comes up as an issue with this name. As an aside, my sister is Andrea and almost everyone calls her "Ann-dree-uh." Occasionally "On-DRAY-uh," but whatever.

Laura and Lauren are beautiful. I don’t know why they aren’t more popular.

One thing to consider with Laura - Do you pronounce it Lore- ah or Law-ra ?

I refuse to use any names that can be pronounced 2 ways (Brianna - bree- anne- ah or bree- ah- na, Laura/Laurie/Lauren, Elisabeth - elisssabeth or eli - z-abeth, Clara- clare-uh or Clah-ra, Andrea- ohn-dree-uh, anne-dree-ah, ahn-dray-uh... Elena, Leslie, Ariel....

No one pronounces it Low-ra, weirdo.

Hey weirdo - I did not say Low-ra. And I have a co-worker who is adamant that it is pronounced LAU-ra (lau rhymes with ow). There was a whole thread on this a couple years ago, and there were many others who pronounce it like my co-worker.

It's pronounced like that in Spanish too.

And Italian. BTW, since when do civilized adults call each other "weirdo"?

My friend named Laura pronounces it Law-ra. The first syllable has a schwa sound for the au.

She is very adamant that it is most definitely not pronounced Lora. She always says that if she wanted it pronounced Lora, she would have spelled it that way.

I’m a Laura and people call me both. I introduce myself as “Lora” but think “Lara” is also pretty sounding and don’t mind it at all!!

No, but some people do pronounce it more like Lora, and some pronounce it more like Lara. I prefer the first but suspect it’s regional.

Popular names nowadays are not like the Jessicas and Sarahs of yore. You won't have 5 Olivias in a class like we had 5 Jennifers in a class when we were kids.

If popularity matters to you, a lot of people were watching “The Nutcracker” at home during pandemic Christmas, so I bet there will be an uptick in Claras.
