In DC, the mask requirement in child care starts at age two, or when developmentally appropriate for the child. This gives child care providers the ability to make an exception and not require a kid to wear a mask if they can't wear it properly. If the two year old wears it fine, then great. but if the child chews on it, pulls it down, fusses with it etc, then they are not ready to wear it properly and don't have to wear it. I work in a preschool in DC, and this is our protocol.

I'm so mad. We have almost $4k in deposits for this daycare that require 30 days notice for our leaving to get back, but they can just spring the 2 year old mask mandate for next day application. I get that it's not their fault, but it's also not mine. I spent MONTHS interviewing and researching daycares before selecting this one.
Our 2 year old is going to flip out about it. We have trouble getting him to wear a mask for 20 mins on an errand, let alone for 9 hours. And he has a bad habit of pulling on other people's masks (mom and dad's) and I know he will be getting in trouble for it at school (which I don't want him to hurt other kids, but the mask thing he doesn't think of as hurting anybody). This means he's going to spend a lot more time in time outs and discipline and getting yelled at for things that a normal 2 year old does. :/
What is the best or most reasonable way to ask for the deposit back without having to stay the next month?
My two year old is fine wearing a mask.
Why are you not so good at parenting?
Do you want me to coach you on how to be a better parent?

Not anymore. Parent nowadays can get a vaccine. If they choose not to, it’s their choice. I am not subjecting my kid to masks for their benefit.
Kids can get covid. Kids can get long term health issues from COVID. Adults can still get and spread covid with the vaccine. You mask your kid for their own health.
The proportion of kids who get serious COVID or long term issues is tiny. We cannot make public policy or live our life obssessed with COVID. The likelihood of a 2 year old getting hospitalized from covid is same or smaller than the flu for their age group.
Vaccinated folks can get and spread covid - but again, the vaccines eliminate almost all cases of SEVERE disease. We can’t make 2 year olds wear masks so that a 40 year vaccinated person doesn’t feel uncomfortable for a week with mild covid. It is a serious over-reaction and our children deserve a better childhood.

The cdc and Maryland’s mandate is 5 and up.
Yes. And MoCo is two and up and a good daycare isn’t picking a fight about this. It’s dumb but the path of least resistance is to follow the rules.
A good daycare understands child development, unlike the moco government.

My son will start preschool in September when he will be exactly 2.5. They require masks and I was scared about it because he would not even let me put the mask around his neck. Then suddenly we started telling him that he needs to wear a mask when we drop off her sisters at school and he is wearing one (not well and mostly under his nose). The school will work to help him wear his mask... I am not worried... I wish it were different, but it is what it is and I am only worried about separation anxiety at this point since he is already potty trained and “wears” a mask

You need to stop making excuses for your child grabbing someone else’s face. That’s a bigger problem than the kids needing to wear masks— two is old enough to teach to keep his hands to himself.
