Mercedes GLS is much nicer than both of those.

We were looking for the same thing and just purchased a Honda Pilot Elite -- it has three rows (with a large enough third row for shorter adults to be comfortable), captain chairs in the middle row, two moon roofs, DVD player. We previously had a minivan and wanted something better for commuting while still offering three full rows of seating.

We have a Sienna and Ascent for our family of 5. The power in the Ascent going up the mountains for skiing was a huge plus for us. And the AWD in a Subaru can't be beat. Not much trunk space while using the third row, although you can put one side down. We always use a box up top.

We looked at the Atlas, but couldn't commit to VW after having them in the past and the air conditioning always had issues.

A few months ago we bought a Kia Telluride, and, damn, I love that car. So roomy, appointments are very luxurious, huge sunroof, heated/cooled back seats with plenty of leg room for my 6 ft DS. I never in a million years would have considered a Kia, but the Telluride gets amazing reviews and we loved it when we test drove. They are super-popular and hard to get, so expect to pay MSRP or slightly over. We paid about $52k for a top of the line model.

Atlas. We are tall people and the very roomy second row (I have a 6’3” son) helped seal it.

I rode to DE and back in the third row of my friend’s Traverse for a girls weekend and was totally comfortable!

Freaking love our VW Atlas. So much room and so nice to drive. The Captain's chairs are key--kids can't annoy each other and our dog can fit between the seats on big trips. It's a great car. We also considered the XC90 which has a plug-in electric hybrid option now!

On the internet, you can assume that there will be some really useful advice and also some people who assume you're an idiot who can't figure out the most obvious options on your own and/or a pushover who will do what you're told once people tell you you shouldn't have whatever requirements you have.

(I think insisting on an SUV rather than a minivan is ridiculous, but I'm not buying it or driving it. OP is allowed to reject minivans.)
