You don’t need to net your trees.

You don't need to do anything. We live in a wooded neighborhood. Had a zillion cicadas 17 years ago, and lots of new plantings. It was a non issue.

Yep. Our local store is recommending that and said it was effective last time. It’s super cheap. It will look weird for a month, but it’s better than having my 4 brand new trees damaged.

I saw them in the ground while gardening this weekend too. Turned over a log and there were multiple holes, and a cicada still in its brown exoskeleton crawled back down a hole when it saw the light. That said they won’t start laying eggs immediately when they emerge. You can wait until a substantial number have emerged and are flying around before you net your tree. I think it will be another few weeks.

The most damage you will ever get is the females cut slits on young tree branches to lay eggs. The adults are too busy mating to eat, and grubs eat roots in the ground.

I don't remember anything in my garden was damaged at all.
