From, a person who had an out of control dog and had her kid chased down and injured by a dog got out of the house even though they had many safeguards in place.


Saw an extremely out of control pit mix basically swinging on its leash after seeing a smaller dog in Tenleytown yesterday - it was terrifying. This owner had absolutely no control. On the same walk, I saw a shepard that seemed very piqued by smaller dogs but the owner was crossing streets, using clickers and treats, it was really a joy to see so much control and action on a walk at a busy time. Collars of any type - e, prong - only work with simultaneous training.

Look, my reactive dog is being trained. In fact, I don’t think we’ll ever get to a point where we won’t be training. The prong collar is part of that training. It keeps him in check. If he’s walking nicely, nothing is happening and he isn’t in any discomfort. The e-collar is for off leash only, and we’re at the point where he just needs to have it on, we very rarely have to shock him, and the shock is so minor that I can do it on my own bare skin and it just feels like pins and needles.

Yes, this.

Double ended leash or 2 leashes, or clip your leash to both the prong and regular collar, if you do this make sure the clip is heavy and strong.

Always have a back up collar when using a prong.

Dogs are smart and if you can not train him without those abusive torture tools you are a tool.


OMG!!! You don’t know WTF you’re talking about!! A quality prong collar is a training tool, and when used correctly, does not harm the dog. The trainer we worked with where we actually got results requires the use of a prong collar, and this was someone who specialized in training working dogs for police/military.
