And I had a great time driving home from the beach; two others with my same car drove up and waved me over to join them! We had an caravan over the Bay Bridge and drove for miles after together!So much fun!

Slightly tangential bit DH drives an older, rarer car with a niche following. He loves waving or giving a head nod to fellow drivers. It’s often ignored or unnoticed but when he gets a wave back, we all cheer! Fun on long road trips.

A friend of mine years ago waved to someone in the parking lot being friendly at the grocery store. She did not know the person. The guy followed her home and raped her.

Wave to people you know, otherwise be cautious.

That's over the top paranoid pp. Don't wave to strangers in grocery store parking lots.

Waving at other runners/pedestrians, particularly ones you see regularly, particularly a woman to another woman... is incredibly harmless.

I like the idea of waving, but I run a busy loop in Brooklyn, and if I waved at every runner I pass I’d be waving about 70% of the time. Can we just agree in urban areas that this isn’t necessary? Sort of like how you don’t say hi to every passerby?

Oh - I have been waving and smiling to everyone I pass since the pandemic started & I never stopped. I don’t know if that’s the only interaction they get all day! And if some people don’t return it - ahh well idc.

I am from the South. Have lived up and down the east coast. The father north I've gone, the less likely other people were likely to acknowledge a wave or a head nod. Some people would try to avoid me if I said hello. Maybe more people coming in from other regions where not acknowledging people is the norm.
