I didn't say I would "let" them - I said I would understand their feelings and correct the way they expressed them.

Both of my kids spoke to me this way exactly once during their teen years without the imposition of any draconian consequences. They didn't speak to teachers, employers, etc. this way and they didn't regularly speak to me this way. If they did, the consequences would have been different. They are now fully functioning young adults who happened to have called their parents a bad name one time in the past.

That would probably mean complete loss of privilege's for now, then in a week they would get a flip phone for emergency calls
and if they would reform upon following some rules, they could reearn the privilege's but not earlier then after 3 months.

If they don't do the time for the crime then they will come back with more at you. This age is when they try how far they can get away with and whatever they can get away with they will crank up next time.

With this kind of behavior the thing is:
First time is toughest for them, once they get away with one, it is much easier to repeat and do more..

So you need to be careful not let it grow. Otherwise there might be no end.. and no going back.

I would tell him "I understand that you're upset, but don't like it when you speak to me that way. It's disrespectful, and it won't change my mind." Then I would leave the room.
