A few years ago, I witnessed a woman get assaulted on a trail in DC at 2:30pm on a Thursday. It was on a weather day like today - warm, sunny, lovely.
The time of day doesn't matter for men looking to hurt women and girls.
What happened? Did you or someone else intervene?! That’s horrible.
The perp didn't know I was still in eyeshot, but my spidey senses went off when I saw him following her. And when I saw him pull her and heard her scream, I ran towards them - he took off. I called police (who were useless).
Hats off to you!
It still makes me so angry when I think about it.
And I'm so tired of people saying women and girls shouldn't be out alone at night - this sh!t happens all the time. How many times do you hear about creepy men following kids after school? Are these men only good during some hours, and then suddenly get molesty, assaulty, and rapey after dark? They don't give a sh!t about the time of day. Disgusting men just look for an opportunity when it's convenient for them, at any time of day or night.
The issue is safety. Yes, we should be able to go out any time and not worry about these things but that's not the world we live in. Women do bad things too. Its not just men.

I'm sure a bunch of "boy moms" are going to bitch at me, but it's interesting how we think girls need to police their behavior but when it comes to boys we all shrug and say it's normal. If you don't want your son to sexually assault someone stop letting him out by himself at night.

Most caring parents teach that to their boys. The question is what are you going to do about your mean girls?

Do you keep it abstract? Do you share news stories like this? Do you talk about what to do if someone approaches you or attacks you?
This is why I don't let mine wander alone.
A 13 year old could be in 8th grade. Meaning high school in a few months.
A 13 year old will be driving in 3 years.
If your kid plays sports or does an after-school club, it is reasonable to expect that she can safely walk home at 6:30-7:00pm.
It is insane to think that a female, here in the United States, a first-world country, can’t walk home in the evening safely.
THAT is the problem. Not the fact that some parents allow their 13 year old girls to walk home at 6:45pm.
Even so, my teens will not be out alone.
