Yes for about 40 years now it has been that way and it shows no signs of slowing down. Title IX, the success of the USWNT over the past 30 years, NWSL,Euro pro leagues, and generally our culture’s positivity towards female athletes and women’s rights in general are all sustaining this interest. It’s a beautiful thing.

Yep. I grew up in NOVA and my early soccer jerseys said 'Boys Club' on them. That changed to 'Youth Club', SYC in the 80s. It was very big in McLean, Springfield, Fairfax, BRYC all throughout the 80s, HS girls soccer and travel. There was already State Cup and Regionals , Nationals.
