Most pedestrian deaths in MoCo are people running across huge streets in the middle of a block, often wearing dark clothes at night.

You're right. We need even lower speed limits.

No. We need fewer dumbasses running across busy roads in the dark wearing dark clothing.

My local neighborhood wants lower speed limits so it is safer to walk in the street.

This is a bad pandemic habit that needs to go. People just stare at you as you try to drive down the street, like "How dare you drive on my spacious walking path?!"

This was pre covid-19. We don't have sidewalks. Instead of giving up some right of way for sidewalks, the decision is reduce traffic speeds and add as many stop signs as possible.

Seems like it would be a lot safer to just take 7 feet of people's front yards and make a sidewalk. Then no one needs to walk in the street.

You might have the wrong people walking in your neighborhood.

Dc is 20. It’s not possible to drive 20. You lousy take your foot off the gas and drive. Bikes travel faster than 20.

Interesting piece on the history of jaywalking (which was a "crime" invented to sell more cars):

Your neighborhood street already has a 25mph limit. A six-lane road isn’t a”neighborhood street”. It’s a secondary road.

While the roads display millions of signs for drivers, there are virtually ZERO signs for perestrians on the sidewalks rhat warn, inform or alert them just like they do for drivers.

There should be painted signs along the curd in the jay walk areas stating and informing that Jaywlking is illeegal, dangerous, can result in death and will result in fines on a good day if you make it in the other side safely..

We live in the HEAVY populated area with lots of people coming to visit or live from abroad who are used to crossing the street wherever and do not realize the dangers or illegality of this.

Bo. the creepy buss stop ads do not work as they are NOT in the right places for one, and for two the penalty of fine is often greater deterrant then ridiculous picture of a person with yhe tire mark on the face.

Yhere are well known streaches of the buzy streets where people cross more and die.
If a city would try and put a painted signs alonf the curbs there;

Crossing here is illegal. Fine; 100 Dollars

Crossing here after dark, fine doubles. 200 Dollars.

Di you want to bet that the deaths would not dissappear>

Ad to this.. note that this area is monitored by pedestrian camera and police will show up if find you crossing and no life will be lost ever again.

MONEY is what keeps us safer from the speeders on the road and money could keep walkers safe from their risky behaviour.

Exactly. THere is a faction of peopel in MoCo who believe building or improving any roads is going to encourage more drivers and thinks everyone should take public transport. Public transport is great for some people, but not for everyone. They also seem to ignore all the commercial freight -- is an 18-wheeler going to put all their goods onto the Metro instead?

Anonymous wrote:It’s been 35 on river road for a couple of years now, since the accident near Pyle middle school. Connecticut also, has been 35 for quite a while now. The speed is reasonable given the density around both roads.

The River Road speed limit was dropped from 45 to 35 due to political pressure. That stretch of River Road (from 495 to Goldsboro) was built for 45+. Notice it's a 2-lane divided highway, and no driveways exit directly onto River but rather onto a service road. It has guardrails also.

The death near Whitman (on Pyle Road) was due to a driver going over 100mph and another car took a left turn in front of it. I doubt dropping the limit form 45 to 35 would make a driver doing 100mph slow down.

My kids and I now play a game when driving around of finding more dangerous roads in MoCo with a higher speed limit than River Road. Plenty of 1-lane roads with driveways directly onto the road at 45. Heck, look at Bradley Boulevard -- that is 35 also, yet there's a lot more risk there since it's only 1 lane and so many driveways backing onto it.

The variable speed limits will make driving worse. I'm not exaggerating-- every hundred feet or so, the speed limits change. It's the definition of speed trapping. The limits switch so often that one is bound to go over.

It’s not just about doing the right thing for the environment by discouraging gasoline vehicles.

It is also an important revenue stream funding many programs.

Anonymous wrote:I think we need a lot more restrictions. Bethesda is still a deathtrap for cyclists and pedestrians. At the type of density we are now at, it does not make sense for everything to be built for cars rather than people.

People are in cars and with the amount of density that MoCo is allowing, there needs to be common sense regarding roads. I'm not suggesting pedestrians and cyclists take a back seat, but with more cars moving through the roads, The Powers That Be need to do a better job with traffic for everyone. Simply reducing speed limits is not the answer.
