If you’re waiting for a 6th grade spot, I think families have had to accept or decline by now. If you haven’t already gotten a spot, you won’t. Go ahead and put down that deposit.

I think people keep missing the point that you now have to reapply to get on the waitlist every year.
And there is a lot of movement in 9th grade. My child went to HB beginning in 6th. Many of her HB classmates left after 8th grade (I know of 11) - some moved out of the area, some went back to n'hood school.

My child goes to HB. I know two families that got 6th graders in off the wait list a couple of years ago. One found out pretty early because someone didn't accept a slot. I'm not sure when the other family heard.

I have three kids in middle and high school - one at HBW and two at neighborhood schools. We know of many kids who didn't see any waitlist movement but also know of a few who got in from the waitlist for sixth grade, or eventually got in for high school.

A few kids who got lottery spots for sixth or ninth grade will decide to go back to their neighborhood school after giving HBW a try. As mentioned previously, some go back to their neighborhood school because of the lack of sports and fewer elective choices at HBW or because they want to be in school with their neighborhood friends. Another consideration for some is transportation. APS now uses a hub system for option schools where students from several neighborhoods meet in a central location - community center or school - to catch the bus. Bus assignments far from home could end up being a deterrent for some.

As the previous poster said, don't count on it as most kids don't give up their spots but you never know!

Also a very high number on 8th grade waitlist, didn't move, that was this past year during COVID when you would have been crazy to change out of H-B during virtual. Got in at ninth grade. !!!

There are certain number of new kids that drop out of 6th and 9th at the start of each year (mostly boys), so stay on the waitlist, if you are interested.

We were #1 on waitlist for 9th and never got a spot.

Someone on the list at our elementary for 6th last year gave up their spot so their kid could go to Swanson, because they didn't want to be away from their friends and wanted to continue to do sports. It's very hard to do sports from HB as a 6th grader (in normal non-covid times when middle schoolers actually do sports). And the admin has made clear that they do not bus kids to home schools after school for sports in middle school.

Not PP but why do you care if someone is asking these questions? Why don't you just move on from reading them if they don't interest you or you don't have helpful input?

Someone telling you the truth is often helpful input. All these parents are on edge wondering if their kids going to get into HB. There’s little to no movement on the waitlist. They should to move on.

I don’t know about anxiety. But definitely futility. Very unlikely to see much movement at this date unless kids get into private or TJ for 9th.
