That's a matter of opinion. It makes people sound uneducated.

That's the stereotype and a matter of your opinion too.

There's also really no such thing as a "southern" accent. There are tons of different accents all throughout the South. Like any region, some are nicer sounding than others. A hick backwoods twang is a very different sound than a genteel Carolinas drawl. Personally, I'll take a country twang any day over dumb-blonde-vocal-fry-upspeak.

People in the mid-Atlantic say y’all - especially those whose families have lived here for generations.
yous guys

I've never heard anyone say "yous" outside of Philly or Wilmington.

Perhaps I need to add "tremendous" and "bigly" to my vernacular. Or, maybe it will all fade away like magic.

I have a pretty strong SWVA accent. I'm able to put on a more "standard" sounding Mid-Atlantic accent while at work and around people I don't know well, but I can't fully get rid of it. My Southern accent remains while around family and friends and remains especially pronounced after a few too many drinks.

Drop your tongue a little more into your throat.

Both southern and Brooklyn accents have been proven to make you appear less intelligent. Same with Valley Girl fry.

No help here, but I do notice that Chris Cuomo has softened his New York accent while Andrew’s is like nails on a chalkboard.

Southern accents are pretty.

My mother, from rural Georgia, consciously changed her accent when she went to college at Barnard by working with a theatrical professor and practicing. She can turn it back on when she wants but is totally comfortable in her adapted accent and says it’s second nature to her. So, yes, it sticks.

Why change who you are?

Because you don’t like your accent. Because it’s “who you were” not necessarily “who you are”. Because change is good.

There are speech language pathologists who specialize in accent reduction.
